Buying some new Alloys

Im wanting to buy some alloy wheels for my Mk6 Escort for quite a while. Having never bought any before, Im pretty unsure as to what I should look out for, so any tips would be useful.

I originally thought that 16" ones would be the ones I should go for, but Ive been told that they could work out being more expensive because replacement 16" tyres are less common than 15" and 17", and therefore more expensive. Is this correct? Or was the guy I was speaking to tying to sell me the more expensive 17" ones?

I saw some 17" Fox alloys with Hankook tyres for £750 reduced to £600 at Halfords. Does the price seem reasonable? What about the Hankook tyres? I know tyres can vary a lot in terms of quality, so how do people here rate them? The exact same 16" ones were about £100 less.

Lastly, are there any other things I should think about when changing to alloy wheels? I know that the ride will be harsher and the noise level higher inside the car fitted with alloys, but are there any other disadvantages?

Thanks for any comments

I think that's true about 17" tyres being cheaper than than 16" tyres. Most people now buy 17" wheels and so the more demand, the cheaper they can sell them for.

Be very careful when buying new alloys that are cheap,as i've seen quite a few where the quality of the wheel, casting is appaulling,so beware in extreme circumstances they my be dangerous. Al.

tbh mate, i would choose 17s. when i had my escort i brought 15" rims and tyres for £400 package. they looked ok, and chrissyboy said, ul want to lower it once u have 15/16s on.

where as 17s wont look as bad non-lowered. on another note u will loose a bit of accleration with bigger wheels, but as escorts aint hugely nippy apart from the obvious ones, it not gonna matter to much.

if i were u, i would fork out for some 17s because they look MUCH better, in my opinon 8)

Good luck in choosing, and welcome :thumb:

Thanx for the welcom everyone. I know once I start with the wheels I wont be able to stop! Its my first car (although Ive been driving for about 4 years), so its the first opportunity Ive had to do any modifications at all. I suppose a nice shiney set of alloys should be first on anyones list....

So is £600 a reasonable price for a set of 17's? I know Fox isnt exactly a premium brand compared to others like Momo, but Im not really that bothered. And the tyres - are Hankook ok, or should I ask for another brand of tyre?

Thanks again
