good or bad idea?

i've tried and tried to find somewhere that does a reasonably priced decat pipe for my car but the only one is £350! so i'm thinking, get a downpipe/cat cut the cat out and weld in a new piece of pipe. i know it's not gonna be all nice shinny stainless like the rest of the system but do you think doing this will help gain anything or am i just likely to end up buggering it up if i mess?

 

surely someone has tried this already?

its a better idea if you take the cat off and make your own decat pipe, just get a piece of pipe big enough to fit, make 2 brackets for each end the same as on your cat and then simply bolt it up. shouldn't be any harder than that or alternativly if you have got/can get another cat for it then smash the insides of it out with a long bar, shake all the bits out and then bolt it on, achieves the same thing, acts as a resonator box for extra growl and also looks the same from underneith.

where abouts is the cat on yours mate? is it underneath or on the down pipe?

U wont really gain any performance for decatting, as it looses back pressure, so in reality u may loose some

I'm sure I read/heard somewhere that the cat is only restrictive after 140bhp+

well it's under the car but is all part of the downpipe, there are no flanges that it bolts onto or anything it's just part of the pipe coming off the manifold

 

gotta admit pete i had heard that too but some agree some don't, my uncle had a full straight through graham goode system on his escort cossie and that alone made him another 11bhp (well so they said anyway). but like ian said if it's gonna cost me back pressure which will really loose me power then it ain't worth doing just so it sounds a bit better.

 

oh well looks like it's back to the drawing board for some cheap power gains

I`ve had that done and it works a treat, also you just have to remove the whole pipe abd put original one back on for MOT

well i'm confused now! dunno weather to give it a go or not! millsy did it make any noticable difference to the performance?

 

if i can get my hands on a downpipe/cat for not too much wonga then i might give it a try, can always swap it back over if it doesn't play nicely

Sounds about right for a high powered turbo car, dont expect the same on our relatively mild naturally aspirated blocks

nah i was never even dreaming of getting that kinda figure from decatting it but was just wondering what difference if any it would make.

 

so what do we think, if i can pick up a pipe cheap enough and bodge something up is it worth having a go or is it just a pointless thing to be trying?
