On a standard car its best to have the same make all round, at least have the same make on the same the same axel. For an escort have the same tyres the on the front as that's where it is more important for a front wheel drive car. Replace in pairs as a half worn one will not grip the same as a new one, and can have a huge impact if that occurs on the front! Different makes give different grip and different handling, so best to keep them the same.

Different sizes is madness!

i heard on a fwd that you should have the largest tread on the rear. sure stu can confirm one way or another :)
