Barry-334 Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 Me again... having a problem with my laptop (Acer Aspire with Vista Home Basic). Without warning, while in the middle of something, it'll just shut down. No error messages, no pass go and collect £200, just off. Also seems to be quite hot underneath. Try and reboot, and shuts down again. eventually got it to restart, but because of the previous failed attempts to restart, it goes into "recovery mode" searching for errors. Not sure if the heat thing is related. wondered whether it has a built-in shut down if it gets too hot, but haven't been using it extensively. (half an hour or so at a time). I have opened the rear cover and checked the fan. It comes on when you boot up and then goes off. it does kick back in when you run any applications, so assume this is normal. any help would be appreciated. eetaylog Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 overheating would cause your laptop to shutdown as they have an auto shutdown when the system reaches a critical level. where do you use your laptop? as stupid as it sounds, its best not to have them on your lap as the fans will struggle to get rid of the heat. try using it in a way that is less restrictive to the fan exhaust. When I first realised it was getting hot, I started using it sat at a desk, so it can be properly ventilated. but still have the same problem... caled Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 The BIOS should say whether its set to turn itself off it the CPU reaches a certain temperature, if its that then you'll need to make sure all the air vents are clear from dust and that there is always plenty of room around the exhaust vents. Alternatively, it could be windows crashing and automatically rebooting, to check if its this you can simply disable the automatic reboot, which will show you a BSOD. to do this on Vista, go to the control panel, click on system, then under tasks select System protection. The system properties box will pop up, select the Advanced tab and then the settings button under startup and recovery. here, make sure that Automatically restart under the system failure box is NOT selected. Saying all that, my money is on automatically shutting down due to temperature. yeah, you really dont want to use it lying on a bed, itll get really hot really quick Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
