Ahmotorsport
Changed the plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap and leads yesterday, couldn't do the oil as i forgot to take a 1" spanner for the sump bung. Also couldn't do any work on the head today as i forgot it was mothers day, i'm sure she wouldn't be impressed if i was at work all day. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/10169272_10202797982742001_1244472551_n_zps5da575db.jpg Also, i grounded out again yesterday and now there isn't much of my silencer left. There is no way i can put up with that dreary droning noise any longer. So i've got a sport silencer coming to fit onto that 4 branch manifold. Ahmotorsport
Well, a good, but not so good day on the Imp today. First of all took it to work for an oil change, check over and wash. There is a couple of holes in the body, above the rear suspension arms, so that will need sorting when the engine comes out. The Rotoflex couplings are absolutely shot. So they need doing pretty sharpish, BMW ones will go on now. Went to old work, started porting the cylinder head, did two inlets, however i did just go through the cooling jacket, A small set back but, it's the only way you learn just how big you can go, by the way, when i say big, i still mean small. So i'll have to get that welded up, or sleeved, depends on if i go through another one. Stripped the bottom end to find the only useable bits are the block and pistons. Still, onwards and upwards, engine building has begun. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_103623_zpsf9903d79.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_111337_zpsf5e8fd62.jpg What's left of my silencer http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_111347_zps9f646e80.jpg Rotoflex coupling http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_114908_zpsc81c7324.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_114918_zps47d163d9.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_114938_zps1949fc63.jpg Washed http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_171502_zpse6143ae0.jpg Block on the stand http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_171520_zpsc2ad0df5.jpg Inlet port http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_182633_zps2c568306.jpg All stripped http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_182640_zps5d430d35.jpg Knackered crank http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140405_182653_zps294bcdad.jpg A size comparison for you. Ahmotorsport
Just got in contact with the bloke that sold me the engine, i said how bad it was and that i think he sent the wrong engine (as if you remember he had another engine with a knackered bottom end) to which he replied "No it isn't, i ran with that engine for months and it didn't smoke or knock or anything." Well, the big ends on rod number two are no thicker than a .5mm feeler gauge. This engine is supposed to have new shells and rings in it. Pretty standard as i'm sure most of you know from previous experience. Edited April 5, 2014 by Ahmotorsport

Ahmotorsport
sounds like you should be asking for your money back!I have done. We'll see what happens, can't say i'm best pleased. But that's "Engine Builders" and "Experts" for you. Just slap it together with new shells and rings, never mind about the knackered crank.
scottybo
bit rubbish on the cylinder head there bud, but as you said, now youve learnt, wont make that mistake again! when i did my zetec head i only enlarged the ports the tiniest little amount, for fear of going through something lol

These ports are only 1" on the opening, they near enough half that in the middle, i tried to take it up to an inch all the way down, live and learn, No matter what happens, it's having big ports, i'll find a way round it. Ahmotorsport
Right. Ahmotorsport
Another fairly unproductive day today. I'm getting rather fed up with these Imp people. They've all lost the plot. First of all, my silencer still isn't here as he STILL hasn't posted it. Secondly i started stripping my carbs down as i wanted to have them on the car this weekend. Only to find out this "Matched" pair of Strombergs is two singles that's been very badly cobbled together and would cost more to put right than they're worth. Then, the ram pipes i bought for them don't fit. Good carburettor day today. Some up sides. I've worked out the spacing required for the BMW prop doughnuts, i've drawn up a diagram for the engineer, hopefully he'll get on with them ASAP as my doughntus really are on their last legs and if they let go it takes the rad and shocks with them. I fitted a new rear number plate. Also Mike with the Focus was down with my birthday present. A custom PACE aluminium radiator, it was originally made for his focus, but was too small, from that day, i knew my Imp would own it one day, that day, is today! http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140412_114217_zps62143ff5.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140412_153519_zps485ae576.jpg Also, i didn't show you these. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140412_174834_zps514f98c9.jpg
Ahmotorsport
It's been a good week for Imp. A sport head popped up on eBay, there was a HIllman Imp sport out the factory (which my exhaust is off) which also had twin Strombergs and a better head. The head is better as the ports are slightly bigger than standard and also has more room around them for improvement, not only that the inlet valves are 1.28" compared to my standard 1.2". Well, i needed this head, no matter what it costed. I've been waiting for one for some time, but they just never come up, i won it at £220. I was prepared to pay about £300 for it (all my bank account would allow!) so got it a bit cheaper which was nice. Today, my sport silencer arrived, so i drove to old work to weld it up as it needed a small repair and fit it on, which i did so, i also noticed that my drive couplings really were on their last legs. I think they would have let go on the drive home. Luckily, the engineer had just finished making the spacers for the BMW ones, so i bolted them on at the same time, The car is already much better. The exhaust has made quite a big improvement, that may sound silly, but when you see my standard manifold, you'll see why it was such a big restriction, not only that, there was no length to it. Can't wait to bolt the twin carbs up and see what it sounds and goes like then! http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_150054_zpsf3237cf6.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_131225_zps8c294be5.jpg On the bench, ready for me to weld up http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_150106_zps9cfd3106.jpg All done. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_150101_zps4d62cd7a.jpg Old manifold off (You can see how bad it is, the silencer literally bolted onto that. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_150112_zpsf0175077.jpg New manifold on http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_153032_zps8a4559f9.jpg Drive coupling spacers i had made. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae68/Ahmotorsport/20140418_150117_zps8539f99a.jpg What it looks like on the car. Ahmotorsport
I've also been looking at Cam options and for a mild road there isn't really, Piper make one and kent used to make one, but they really are, very mild in comparison to the factory cam, so i'll be onto Del at Kent Cams, give him some figures and see what he can make me. I can get a cam with a band of about 2-7000, not much more in the way of lift, which Imps are renown for liking and then it jumps right up to about 3500 - 7500 and so on. I'd like to reach 8000RPM if i can as that's where the power will be unlocked on such a small engine, but it does need to be driveable. I'd be chuffed with a 2500-8000. Let's see what Del has to say.
