Naylor2006
For all those who have fitted blue LED's to your dial cluster. Did you keep the standard bulbs and replace the filter with a blue one, if so what did you use for the blue filter? Or just rip out the filter and replace with blue LED's? I'm wondering if the latter doesn't give as smoother glow? Thanks all.

I simply fitted a flexible 12v 30 LED strip inside the entire unit (£10 Egay) and it has enough light to counteract the green filter entirely. by far the best result Ive seen from such a simple operation. not the best pictures but still.....http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25788.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25789.jpg...you get the idea Edited September 9, 2011 by shawdreamer
Naylor2006
I get the idea mate, wire it to the illuminated wire I assume then? Stick the strip in the place of where the filter is?

Stick the strip in the place of where the filter is? behind the filtered dials, the green is in the dial facias so hard to remove, the blue leds simply overpower it. when it comes to ford wiring, I make a point of not getting to involved and keeping my additions silly simple. Havent had mine apart for sometime but I thought the green filter glows from infront of the dial faces not through the back.

Havent had mine apart for sometime but I thought the green filter glows from infront of the dial faces not through the back. nope. the green is created with a slight coating of laminate inside the molding of the gauge facias themselves, there might be earlier variants with different methids but generally you cannot remove the filter on the main dials simply because its inside the molding as said. the trick is to strip apart the entire gauge binnicle and take the gauges out of the rear (white) section entirely, then afix your led strip inside the casing, bent so as it will light the three areas directly behind the gauge points before replacing the gauges themselves. the wiring can be soldered to one of the many bulb points that you no longer need and the entire thing should function as required. I will say tho, Id opt for a minimum flexible strip of 36-38 LED's to do the job as you'll need it good and bright so as to overpower the green filter in the dials, In the above picture you can see mine are a nice royal blue in colour, the LEDs themselves are a lighter blue than is visable but once the light passes throught the filter layer it darkens in tone slightly. the more lighter vibrant colours would likely work as good or better. It was by far the cheapest mod with the most dramatic result Ive done on a escort...... and at a tenner cost you just cant knock it. caldoofy
mk6 is 'floodlit' from infront of guages, take guages out remove green filter replace bulbs with blue leds and away you go :-)
TC-DNB
mk6 is 'floodlit' from infront of guages, take guages out remove green filter replace bulbs with blue leds and away you go :-) +1. It's easy to cut out the green filter and swap the bulbs over. Gives a nice even glow IMO. However saying that, Shaws way seems pretty easy and decent too! Had my set pretty much down to the circuit board to fit plasmas once.
