HI GUYS ,2 wks ago i fitted a 2litre blacktop focus engine into my 1.6 Mk6 escort.the engine change went well with the necessary mods which had to be made,ie engine mount and modify the existing altinator/power steering bracket,,,,,,got it running on the 1.6ecu and the temp gauge worked fine,,,,,,,,,,,after fitting the DESK ECU (60 pin) with the pin swap as stated off threads off the net (checked with numerous forums which was all the same wires ) the temp gauge doesnt work now ,,,,,CAN ANY1 HELP WITH THIS ISSUE !!!!!!!!!!!

There is categorically a difference between the later after 1998 (digi dials) escorts and the earlier.

I did the same conversion on my old escort, x reg, 1.6 ecu temp gauge, 1.8 ecu temp gauge and finally when the DESK was fitted no temp gauge however on my R reg temp gauge still works.

I would suggest (although not got round to it yet) that the mondeo ecu is too early and therefore doesn't understand the later temperature sender, my first point of call was to change the water temp sender that feeds the dials to one from the older escorts, I cant confirm if it works yet but worth a shot.

Isn't it on the thermostat housing, been meaning to find out too, got bogged down with my car and been meaning to revisit this. Funnily enough it's the guy with my old escort who also has my haynes. :/

Bet Etrebus knows.

I've not been able to confirm this, but I think the problem is that the digidials get their feed via the DOL link using the ECU temp sender, whereas on the early Mondeo ECU they got it from a separate sender.

il take the clocks out at the wk end and have a play, do some wire tracing ,,,,but il keep the ball pane hammer at hand just in case lol

that so lost me!

Any suggestions in simple JC terms on how to solve the problem?

As I said I have never confirmed this but this is what *I think* the problem is.

The DOL - data output link - is what feeds the trip computer so has rpm, road speed, etc, but Ford kept on adding functions to the data stream and I believe that this stream is also what drives the later digidials temperature gauge. If I'm right then the problem is that the early Mondeo ECUs predated digidials (or a less developed version of them), so never had the same data on the DOL that the later Escort ECUs have.

If some people have a working gauge after the conversion, then it may be that there are also different versions of the Escort digidials which use the sender and not the DOL for temperature. If you know anyone with a working set then bug them to give you the FINIS code off of them and compare to your's.

I may be wrong of course! Any Ford electronics technicians out there?

I dont think it matters what version of digi dials you have, they wont work with a mondeo 2.0 ECU unless your escort pre dates digi dials, therefore only those who have converted to digi dials get a working temp gauge which for the record it doesnt work quite as accurately as an escort that came with digidials stock and also hasnt had its ECU changed due to an engine conversion.

Ive tried 3 sets of dials and they all work, fiesta, puma and finally black escort ones, temp gauge 'works' on all three and the black ones were finesse ones (X reg) which dont work in the same 2.0 conversion in my mates car.

Happily proved wrong though.

Someone just needs to look at a wiring diagram for the late clocks to find out if there's an ECT sensor feed to it.

Problem with this is its not in the Escort Haynes, guess you could use a MK5 fiesta one, wouldnt be 100% if it was the same though.

In my Haynes it states that 'some escorts after 1998 were fitted with a digital instrument cluster, these are not documented here' Cheers, I suspect Ford will do one though obviously.
