But the shiny lump-o-lead on wheels:

Ok... it's not a looker but for an true-Jap 89 it's pretty much top spec!

125bhp-ish (before it left Japan) 2.0L lump, Full remote central locking, power steering (My 94 Escort didn't have that!) , fully electric windows (including full driver control), electric mirrors, adjustable everything, headlight washers, insanely huge boot - More than pretty much any car in 89 and way more than the nearly top spec (when registered) 2006 Pug 107 parked next to it.

It's fast enough and powerful enough to go anywhere in 5th... It's comfy enough (The fully independent suspension feels like a Rolls Royce) with armchairs for seats and has been well looked after.

Drained my bank account for £500 and for that I get a 89 on genuine 85,000miles which has always been serviced and repaired by a Toyota deal with genuine parts (Apart from the alloy wheels), passed every MOT with no fails and no advisories, had headlight protectors on since new and even front seat covers on since new (brand new looking seats underneath).

Bodywork is in great shape for the age with only a little bit of bubbles on the read left arch.

Timing belt is meant to be done every 60,000 I think... last one was done as advised by a Toyota dealer due to age and not miles at 45,000 in 2002

- No idea when to do it again... May as well meet the local dealer!

Was a tough choice between this and an Omega 2.5L V6 - A no brainer in most peoples books but £1500 a year insurance on an Omega or £500 a year on this.

Both have very similar power, weight, top speed, comfort and economy. And both perfect for mile munching.

Plus an Omega would last 3 mins on the drive before some chav stole it...

I still have the bike but it's now up for sale. (Also Jap, 89 and same shade of red... wierd!)

Cheers guys!

Definitely given me a positive view on Toyota as still feels new!

It has plenty of torque/low RPM ponies as well which means motorway overtakes are so easy and calm. Just feather the right foot and bye-bye 1.1 Saxo reving your nuts off in the middle lane!

Im not so keen on the newer toyotas. I had an 01 Y reg corolla with the 1.6 VVTI engine in top spec GLS trim and it didnt feel as special as the older car and just felt like a tool, a means of getting from a to b. drove superbly but just dull. older one was actually fun and sounded better :)

Money shot! - Not much room left in there!

Yeah, I'd like to see your reasoning on choosing this over other cars you can get for £500 from the germans/swedes

He wrote three paragraphs on it in the OP :\

Yeah for £500 I could have got any of a long list of cars... All of which were £1000+ a year to insure.

I even spotted an fairly new shape A3 and Passat for the same price (with 200k plus on the clock) but both were £2500+ insurance.

Not to mention the thousands of BMWs for sub-£500... all of which are the bigger engines which no insurer will touch me for. The smaller engined models with the same year, MOT, tax etc go for £1000+ because of insurance cost.

This was one of the biggest, most powerful cars I could find around here within a cheap runabout budget and it's £500 a year insurance (and that's with or without the mrs on the policy), cheaper than little 1.0-1.4l hatchbacks by 50%!

I won't even imagine where insurance companies come up with their prices but when I can insure a 107 for £600, why would I want to pay more than that to insure a runabout for when the mrs has the 107?

So in short... my reason was insurance cost... The fact that it's a top spec, quick Jap tank is just an added bonus!

Did some digging for an electrical fault which turned out to be sh1t wiring on the radio by previous owner... put the earth to interior lighting wire... radio worked but shorted the dash and tail lights and blew fuses...

Now that's fixed by making a new earth for it.

Came across this when searching for problem but Google does'.nt hold the answer :(

Anyone have a clue what this is

It was on the passenger side under glove box... looks like a chip to me...
