been looking at a accident damadged rover 25 today not much damage at all but found engine wont start sounds very much like there is little or no compression ,rad is broken and has lost all its coolant so im assuming it was driven after it was crashed and done a head gasket .my question is what are the chances that the overheating has damaged the engine beyond repair. the car has only done 20,000 miles and is in execellent order apart from the above .im willing to do a head gasket but dont want to end up changing the engine .the car is up for £400 and its a 53 plate i know any overheating can f**k the engine but i know thes engines are also very prone to head gaskets but how many need a new engine ??

I would have said you would get away with getting the head skimmed and putting on a MLS headgasket, obviously get the block checked when the head is off but i dont think ive heard of a rover engine fcuking the block from overheating.

There is plenty of bits about for them, so even if the head is beyond salvage a replacement wouldnt cost the earth.

cheers for speedy reply thats what i wanted to hear would have thought it would be siezed if it was f***ked, do you kwow if they break down due to low compression before they over heat seriously :thumb:

It's not about how flat the faces are now, it's about have the pistons partially seized in, or even seized in completely.

I'd say it's not worth it. Even if the worst happens and you put another engine in, 9 times out of 10 that engine is also nackered, i've had experience with that 4 times now.

The rule of thumb for K series is the head gasket will fail after every 25,000 miles.

ithink the issue is sorted now if you fit the modified mls gasket :thumb:

I've got no experience with the MLS gasket, so i can't say anything about it. I just try and steer clear of anything with K Series written on it! (i kid)

I'd still say it's not worth it, purely because if the pistons are seized, it needs a new engine and that engine may also have unknown problems and it will cost you time and money for nothing. Are they even worth £400 when they're running correctly?

The K Series was doomed from the start when they put the thermostat in the block.

I believe they even run the same head gasket whether it's 1600 or 1800, which is silly.

i see what you are saying but where can you get a 20,000 mile car for £500 .the head gasket will prob cost about £100 to do and the damage is purley cosmetic an engine would cost me £200 ish just the head gasket and its a cheap car but an engine change might not make it worth it :thumb:

But do Rovers have any value? Apart from the Honda engined ones?

Yeah but if you add it up, for the worst.

£400 for the car

£50 for the gasket kit

£30 for head skim

Still fails.

£200 for another engine.

You're getting onto £700 if worst comes to worst, that's just for the mechanicals, then it's also no longer a 20,000 mile car.

Of course if this car isn't for making a profit, then that's completely down to whether it's worth it to you.

But bare in mind, you can get this for £300 which has a poorly engine

And the Focus is a 10x better car.
