You say its misfiring, so of course it doesn't sound right, is it sparking and fueling on all cylinders etc. Unless its actually cooked itself id be surprised if its head gasket, from factory they last about 50,000 and then its 25,000 after that.

its definatly got hot as the oil smells burn't a head gasket on these apparantly can go at any time especially if they get hot and the fact that it is empty of coolant could have caused it to overheat my only concern is that the bottom end /pistons got damaged but as the oil pressure seems to be ok im hopeing that it hasn't picked up on a bearing or piston hers the car

i see what you are saying but where can you get a 20,000 mile car for £500 .the head gasket will prob cost about £100 to do and the damage is purley cosmetic an engine would cost me £200 ish just the head gasket and its a cheap car but an engine change might not make it worth it :thumb:

But do Rovers have any value? Apart from the Honda engined ones?

Yeah but if you add it up, for the worst.

£400 for the car

£50 for the gasket kit

£30 for head skim

Still fails.

£200 for another engine.

You're getting onto £700 if worst comes to worst, that's just for the mechanicals, then it's also no longer a 20,000 mile car.

Of course if this car isn't for making a profit, then that's completely down to whether it's worth it to you.

But bare in mind, you can get this for £300 which has a poorly engine

And the Focus is a 10x better car.

1.its done 70k

2. if it hasn't had a clutch then its due

3.its probably got a head gasket problem as well

at least i know that every componant has only

done 23,000 miles and if i have to do a head gasket then at least it will have been done.because odds on it would need one in the future anyway :thumb:

I've had loads of Rovers over the years, used to be mad into them.

A common thing i used to remove that caused headgaskets to fail was the ball bearing, at the rear of the engine near the injectors on the left hand side, or if it's a VVC to the left of that, you will see a small pipe coming out just, (not the fuel pipes) and the pipe goes back to the expansion tank.

When the engine is fine, the water should flow out of that pipe, because of the silly system is uses the ball bearing sometimes becomes stuck and blocks water from coming out of it, by using a screw driver and poking that ball bearing out i was able to use a little rover 414 for nearly 2 years with a blown headgasket :)

The 25's are great cars and if when you've got it up and running you have any immobiliser problems you know who to ask ;)

thanks for that .so do you recomend i remove if its rusty ?or leave it if it looks good and clean .my only worry is that it has been cooked so hot the engine is knackered or the head cracked i actually have three rovers(2x 25 and a metro ) so i expect a immobiliser will fail on one of them lol :thumb:

well took off the head toay to find that the liners had been bashing against the head and wrecked it in doing this the liners have also been bashing into the block so i have a engine with internals that are like new but the block is scrap ,so changing the engine tommorow :(

done it today .lowererd block and gearbox(surprised me as it was a fiesta gearbox??) built up new engine but left off aircon and the bracket for the altenater and exhaust manifold. lifted it up from below was a bit tight and i broke the oil pressure switch i would recommend removing the front cross member or removing power steering pump (but pump looks tricky to fit it back)then i think it would fly in easier

it was ford that bought out rover and closed them down so im not suprised you found a few blue oval bits under there! might explain why rovers hate going into reverse as much as fords do!
