Nothing wrong with the 1.4's and 1.6's

This would tick the boxes for you, it's a little more than £400, but costs £35 road tax and returns 70/75mpg on the motorway (if you're not a crazy fast driver).

Same age and milage as mine.

found out today that the car has been parked for several months .can the hydraulic tappets drain themselves of oil if left resulting in low/no compression ? i know it can happen on cvh engines but just makes them rattle , but anyone had this happen to a rover 25 ? :thumb:

Eh? Why would that happen?

It's not about how flat the faces are now, it's about have the pistons partially seized in, or even seized in completely.

I'd say it's not worth it. Even if the worst happens and you put another engine in, 9 times out of 10 that engine is also nackered, i've had experience with that 4 times now.

The rule of thumb for K series is the head gasket will fail after every 25,000 miles.

The rover boys say its about 40k, there was a poll or something on MGRover.org and thats what the average was

ithink the issue is sorted now if you fit the modified mls gasket :thumb:

I've got no experience with the MLS gasket, so i can't say anything about it. I just try and steer clear of anything with K Series written on it! (i kid)

I'd still say it's not worth it, purely because if the pistons are seized, it needs a new engine and that engine may also have unknown problems and it will cost you time and money for nothing. Are they even worth £400 when they're running correctly?

The K Series was doomed from the start when they put the thermostat in the block.

I believe they even run the same head gasket whether it's 1600 or 1800, which is silly.

The 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 all have the same headgasket. They all have the same block its just different thickness liners for the different engine sizes.

Ive done a few headgaskets on the K series, a good friend of mine keeps on buying them :( When they are running they are cracking engines, the 1.4 16v my friend had could keep up with my old GTi, it was cheaper to tax/insure/fuel too. If you are doing the work yourself and you dont count you time in money then i think its a good buy, if you were paying a garage then id say its not. :thumb:

would defo be doing it myself my only worry is if the engine is stuffed as it spins over so fast and sounds like there is no compression .the reason i asked about the hyd tappets is the impact switch was triggered so im convinced it was running at the time it bumped .and the fuel pump would have been cut soon after so saving the head gasket lol

im thinking that the tappets are draining the oil out of them so not opening the valves enough ???

That would keep the compression up then!

You'll have to do some testing mate, start with the basics and work up.

if the inlet valve dosn't open there wont be anything to squish i know this is a long shot but cant think of anything else .im not allowed to strip the engine to inspect it i have to make a decision do i take a chance or let it go .im convinced it was running untill bump (unless it was parked up with a busted cam belt lol) :thumb:

The lifters wouldn't cause that, It sounds as if the belt has slipped hence the no compression, that's what happened when my mates belt snapped

i bought the car anyway as they knocked another £50 off .got it running eventually wouldn't start on key but fired up straight away with a tow only seems to run on two or three cyls ,oil light went straight out and took a while for it to come back on after engine was stopped (oil pressure ok)so im guessing its the usual problem with the head gasket .will take the head off the weekend and see .the previous owner must have driven it after it was bumped :thumb:
