KW-rscos
Hi Guys, Dont want to start an argument, just want constructive comments. I have a '98 GTi, which is currently running an 2.0 Silvertop, it is still running the 1.8 management as I was looking to go megasquirt or the like in future. I was going to turbo it but have decided to save for a cossie instead, this does however leave me with a small dilemma as I have a trip to the ring planned in september, so I was thinking of track readying mine to use in september. The issue I have is, do I stick to tuning the engine I already have (for which I also have the H/O Inlet manifold already) which might see 160, or buy a Focus ST170 engine/box/inlet/ecu/loom off of ebay for 600 notes and swap it over, also if I take this route, how much work will be needed to the mounts? Cheers, Kieren
SLEEMAN
Well considering how much work to put in an st170 engine for the same cost you could buy a set of motorbike throttle bodies like the gsxr1000 ones install em using an st170 inlet manifold or custom one and run them on a good management setup and add a four branch manifold like the st170 exhaust manifold which can just fit needs slight modifications and maybe uprated cams possibly, then some bigger or better brakes for fast road track use, and semi slick tyres or decent road and track day tyres like the Yokohama AD08's etc then that should do the trick! bongo
depends what you can do yourself? if you can do the work to fit the st170 engine go for it,as you'd need itb's and aftermarket management and mapping to make the same power as the st engine, but could cost a grand more. KW-rscos
Think Im going to stick with the Silvertop, and give it a bit of a refresh with the bits I already have and get some decent management hooked up. Thanks guys.
Ahmotorsport
What is your budget? Can you do engine tuning work yourself? Have you considered the RS Turbo engine route? Edited January 21, 2013 by Ahmotorsport

Ahmotorsport
nobody should be recommending cvh's!CVH's are not a bad engine. People seem to forget they were built in the '80's so of course they're not going to be as reliable as a Zetec, but put together right, they do quite well. scottybo
all im saying is we need to save them for mpre retro vehicles lol
SLEEMAN
Basically meaning its best for them to be saved for genuine Rs turbo cars!

Rockerrob666
I must admit I do have a preference for the older engines - not only where they built to last but you could tune them and sort them out without 3grands worth of computers (and the rest probably) plus you could strip them down and rebuild in a day. Although I do rely on the reliability and the economy of the newer engines. Oh why can't we have both in one engine hehe
KW-rscos
Well my budget is probably about 3k, but I need to sort out the rest of the car for that aswell, I already have the 2.0 Silvertop running in my car, I have the H/O inlet and I have a t34 turbo, so I would need new management, downpipe, pistons, intercooler, headgasket, seems no matter which way you go, the engine will cost just as much?! the main difference being that high power will be achievable with a turbo... Stu
ST170 engine and carbs. There you go.
SLEEMAN
Stu did do a budget escort gti turbo which I think is still currently running albeit gets sold on time to time! But he got 200bhp with around the same budget or less but by the way you want to go involving rebuilding the engine is the better way rather than decomp plates. There's a few pistons being sold over on passionford and eBay for good prices! I think someone is selling a complete zetec turbo kit on passionford so get checking it!
