My Escort Finesse

Hello all,

i've been looking on here for about a year (mainly for mechanical advice) so i though it was high time i did a thread about my Escort.

 

I bought her (always a her coz they have to be ladies) about four an a half years ago an shes been a constant ever since. Shes a Finesse with the obligatory 1.6 powerplant (sounds more exciting if referred to as a twincam :) )

Must admit i wasn't too sure at first, the handling was a bit boaty, but it didn't take too long until the bug bit.

 

First came a cat back exhaust, magnex i think, which she still sports.

then some lex-arse lights, which i liked at the time but have since moved on from that sort of thing.

I also meshed the front grills, which im very fond of. i think it looks much neater :)

And some smashing mondy wheels.

then gradually over the next few years i gave her the mondingo front brakes (278mm :) RS2000 rear beam, some polybushes a smattering of strut bracings and a 40mm kit from our friends at Gmax.

Now she was epic in the corners, understeer was no longer my travelling companion, just an acquaintance occasional met.

then i finally around to fitting the GTi skirts that id had for agggggggges.

And she was pretty much as i wanted her (except for the power side of things) and i was very happy :)

A woman pulled out straight infront of me without looking, managed to get my speed down abit, but cheap tyres and greasy road don't mix very well. This is the result of that sour, bitter concoction. I was mortified.

 

But all is not lost...

Was a nice looking escort apart from 2 doors to many lol, cant wait to see whats happened since your mishap.

It ain't a lost cause, the damaged looks pretty terminal but it was all cosmetic, somehow it managed to miss the chassis rail (by about half a mil!) so everything was straight. A couple of new panels and a quick spray later, we're all good :pancake:

 

Just in the process of finishing her new dingo heart so i should have abit more zooooom when we hit the tarmac again.

 

Them numberplates are going by the way, some much better/not mouldy ones will be in their place.

 

Ill post up more progress when i make it, tried to do abit today but the cold beat me back. Snow in March is just crazy.

UPDATE TIME!!

 

Its all getting very exciting, things are starting to happen.

 

The shiny, schexy new engine is just about ready to drop in, just a couple of finishing touches to apply.

 

The postman brought a couple of presents (from me, to me) recently,

Im very excited to get this thing running :) all things being well, the engine should be dropped in tomorrow, probably in the snow.

 

The main piece that's missing is the rear gearbox mount, the standard one was completely knackered, the rubber had come away from its metal housing and looked a bit like a clams shell, so "Upgrade!!" i thought to myself.

Got intouch with Vibra-technics, and found that they don't offer a replacement for that particular mount. I've sent them the standard mount and as i type this, they should be putting the finishing touchs to their latest Escort product :) which makes me jolly excited, as I can now claim (tenuously) that my car is a development mule!

 

Anyhoo thats all for the moment, but more shall be happening soon...

another 1.6? or 2l maybe?

 

word of advice, those protech manifolds dont fit! the decat pipe they provide is way too short so you will need to cut out the flexy and weld a longer one i to compensate, and seein as yours is an x reg it must have air con, so when the motor leans back in the bay under load, the manifold will touch the fan cowling for the radiator and melt it away......also you will need to move the main rad house from the front of the engine, the manifolds too wide and it fouls the hose

 

i used to have one but took it off, too much hassle

Yeh its a Dingo 2l, i was going to put the original engine back in her, but my friend convinced me otherwise :) im really glad he did now.

 

Cheers for the heads up mate, im not fitting it just yet, but i'll have a play around and see if i can do anything with it :thumb: Now i know what im up against!

Cheers dude, the repairs are done, so i just need to get my finger out and get the rest sorted, but it shouldn't be long until she's terroring the tarmac once again lol.

 

 

nice mate update,my rear mount was like that,i made the mistake of buying an ebay one which probably lasted a few thousand miles,genuine ford ftw!

 

When i saw the state of the original i understood why the engine was moving around so much, so i decided to not just replace but uprate :)

 

 

Looked really good with the skirts and spats. Pepper red GTI's are lovely.

 

I have to say though, that is some really dodgy parking just for a photo.

It does look really bad but i did it down an industrial estate near me especially for some shots, and who's down industrial estates on sunday nights but kids with cars and cameras :P

UPDATE!!!

 

Things have moved forwards in the last couple of weeks, im pleased to report.

 

We went from this (no engine)...

As you can probably see, the engine wasn't sat right here, i was waiting for the postie to deliver my schiny schexy new rear g/box mount so it was sat a lil wonky.

 

But that has arrived now and has been fitted (although i forgot to get any pictures of it first - *slaps head*)

 

For anyone tempted to get one, Vibra-technics made it for me and it appears to be of a very high quality. Im sure if you were to ask nicely they'd make another :)

 

I also removed the sump to give it a good ol' fashioned clean up in a mates parts bath. After it came out the Style Council decided that it needed a paint from all of the leftover cans in my garage, and this was the result

I had to try an get an arty farty one while i was at it :)

 

Must admit im pleased with it, shame its gonna be all hidden away.

 

The nexrt bit is just putting everything back together and then its MOT time...
