cant go wrong with a 3 series rly. i have one myself

the bmw's especially the 6 cylinder engines are THIRSTY. on a 325 u will struggle to get anywhere near 20 to a gallon around town. but otherwise they are fantastic cars. even in basic spec.

there are a few members on here that have 170s and they get shining reviews all the time

How on earth can you speak such nonsense without even knowing what ages of BMW he's looking at? An E46 will do 22-25mpg around town without issue.

Sorry sid me old mukka, but i have to disagree there. My 330 struggles to hit 20mpg farting around built up areas.

As for an st170 v a 3 series, its a no brainer. The BMW will have more toys, be a nicer ride, have tons more torque and wont have a Ford badge on the front.

I don't understand what you're disagreeing with on that evidence? Your car has about 50bhp more and the motor is 500cc bigger than the one in question. I don't doubt that yours struggles to hit 20mpg, but the E46 325i, generally, manages it no problem.

Vote NO by the way. Lets just all be friends.

I used to average 23-24mpg in my 530i.

i only manage about 30 average out of my 318. but then again mines the old n43 8 valve bad boy, the newer ones i guess will be much better

wow didnt expect replys to be that quick the bmw's im looking at are the e46 has to be a m sport as i prefer the look but for a decent one they start to get a bit pricey and the focus is £1995 with 70000 on the clock but then again you get what you pay for

Save up for the 3 series, you wont be disappointed. You can buy my 330 if you want, been thinking about selling for a while.

Owned, no. I'm rather familiar with the cars, though

You're misinforming someone based on your own 'experience' with one car, which isn't even the model in question. The information from E46 325i owners is a click away, and they all seem to be roughly what I've stated. If you can't get just below mid-twenties when driving normally around town, then your 325i has a problem. Full stop.

If you're looking about £2k then the Focus makes more sense as you'd be looking at the arse-end of the E46 325i market. The general upkeep of the BMW is more than the Ford, and if you neglect suspension bushes that are basically service items, then it becomes nothing like the car that it should be.
