demented
Does the electric tailgate release have a relay ? Also, from the interior release switch to the tailgate motor, which side of the car do the wires run ? Currently, when a positive feed is applied to the motor, the motor operates. However, when the switch is operated with ignition off, the tailgate release fails to operate. I'm picking up a switched Negative output at the rear of the release switch. It's a 99 5 door Escort Gti
supersport
the wires should run down the drivers side of the car. have a look at the entry point for the wires at the top ofthe tailgate as the wire could have a break in it there, as the wires move when you open and close the tailgate. demented
Ok thanks.Must admit I thought they would run via the drivers side, wasn't sure. When checking the loom along the drivers side inner sill, I couldn't find wires which matched the wire colours from the switch or the wire colour from the tailgate. Yeah, when I find the wires at the top of the tailgate, I'll do continuity test. I'm also curious in regard to the presence of a relay, as it's a Positive feed which operates the motor but a negative singnal from the switch when pressed ? SLEEMAN
The wires to go to the tailgate are on the passenger side and plug in behind the passenger rear light near the alarm horn. Try checking there you may have to remove the parcel shelf support

I only ask as you seem to be under the strange delusional belief that wire colours coming from a feed point to a termination point (or vice versa) would be the same? it just strikes me as odd you would assume such a common sense approach to vehicle wiring would apply to an Escort.....or tbh any Ford in general. demented
Thanks Sleeman, I'll take a look. Shawdreamer, I've owned many Escorts over many years, although this is the first time I've owned a 5 doors. My strange delousional believe is a good starting point. As there's a white and green wire from a Ford type plug of the actuator, which runs into the tailgate, I see no reason to assume that such a wire would not continuing into the vehicle. Once said wire identified, I'll run a continuity test. If hey Ok, I would trace that wire along its route to it's next point, performing continuity test along the way. Yes, there's a likely possibility the wire colours may change but it's just as likely that the wire from the tailgate runs through the tailgate, into the vehicle and a long the inner sill.
