Joe
Ok Stu... What is a wastegate? How do they differ etc?Do the injectors make a big difference to overall power? Why the rover turbo inlet manifold?
Stu
What is a wastegate? How do they differ etc?The wastegate is basically a bypass valve so exhaust gas can bypass the turbo, it is the wastegate that dictates what boost is produced. You can get internal and external wastegate, the former is what you'd typically have on a production vehicle, the latter on a race car (although not necessarily). External wastegates give you the option to run a 'screamer pipe', which you basically run to the atmosphere to give you a raucus noise when the engine is on-boost. That's why i'm running one mainly Do the injectors make a big difference to overall power? No, injectors have nothing to do with making power and that is a common misconception. Basically if you want to run X amount of horsepower, you need to supply the engine with X amount of fuel, so you have to run a fuel injector big enough to achieve that. You may think 'bigger is better', but infact you want to run the smallest injector you can that'll supply enough fuel (you don't want to run injectors over about 80% - the reasons are a bit too complex for this reply), which is why say a 130bhp Mondeo runs a 170cc/min injector - it's about 20% headroom over what's actually needed. The reason for running the RIGHT size injector is it gives you better control at low injector flow (idle, cruising etc.) which provides you with better atomisation (how the fuel 'mists' when it exits the injector) which ultimately results in a better burn, better emissions and better fuel economy. Although I love Bosch stuff, their injectors are not the best in the world, even though they're the most common, which is why I feel like trying something different on this project and go for the Siemens injectors. At 3.8 bar fuel pressure the "630cc" ones will be more like 700cc, which is enough fuel for 500bhp. Much more fuel than I actually need, which may seem like a contradiction to my statement about about smaller being better, however this particular injector even though it's larger than the Bosch ones I was going to use, has a much better and linear dynamic operating range so will ultimately perform a lot better. Why the rover turbo inlet manifold? The Focus inlet manifold (well, and pretty much any factory zetec inlet) will not flow enough air to make the power I intend to make, so it has to be changed. The Rover inlet manifold will flow the air I need and it's a fairly easy bolt-on to the zetec head with just an adapter plate. Might need to adjust the throttle-body mounting flange though, or change it drastically, but these are relatively minor things that won't be apparent until a dummy install is done in the car. swebber23
And on another thing.. Might go for a modified rover turbo inlet manifold if I do go for the bigger power.. Any want to buy a brand new focus inlet manifold, complete with injectors, fuel rail, throttle body etc.? £50? I have one if you fancy a swap, manifold, injectors, throttle body and stepper motor

Stu
So here's my deluded thoughts on what the clocks should look like.... Stack ST700SR in the middle, showing revs and speedo... and either side a PLX DM-100 configurable gauge, each has up to 4 inputs showing anything like fuelling, boost, pressures, whatever really... It'll look better than my photoshop ability

Joe
I read your reply, and funnily enough, I'm better knowledged now Thanks for taking time to write that up.. Ive always wanted custom dials, but could never find a place to make them/sell them. Plasma was the closest thing, but I'm sure you have someone who makes them for pea-poo Edited September 10, 2007 by Joe
