cargy
Ignoring the lazy freeloaders for the moment, doesn't this suggest that the system is geared towards the wealthier people whose parents are able to subsidise their education and accomodation? Mr_Tom
Fair play to the likes of Mike C and others. I know its an experience to live in halls etc and live the student life but i could not financially live MY life like that know that when i come out of it im 15 or so grand in debt and have to pay it back at a convienent time in my life when im earning over a certain amount. The way i look at it is ive done my a levels, got a job they put me though a HNC and now a degree which all in all has cost them a day off a week for 5 years and my tuition fees which prob add up to about 10K all in all. All i have to do is pass it and then work for them for 2 years and im free to do what i like. In the long run ive got 5 years experience in the industry that no graduate worth his salt has so i can easily get another job elsewhere and as well as that command more monies too. (which i have done) It is not hard to find the right firm that wants to help people further there careers after all they get tax reliefs and other benefits for doing so. Anyways enough of me going on. Uni life is great im sure but like Plumber and Lee said dont do it if you cannot afford it nothings free in this world, we all gotta live with that at the end of the day its about choice and if thats what you choose to do then you got to live with it
Emma
I went to uni and luckily was the last year to not have to pay tuition fees and my student loans are on the old system where I can defer until I earn over a certain amount. When I was earning £20k that was just under so its quite a high amount. Unfortunately though I didn't like that job and wasn't staying in it just for the money. I did Tourism Management and would love a job in that but can i get one? No, because I don't have experience or I could start off at the bottom. I could have left school at 16, started at the bottom and by now (im 25) I could have been where I wanted to be. I don't regret doing it because had a lot of fun but it was bloody hard going, come from a skint family and had to work my arse off to get through uni and still have a load of debt. But its only money, got a whole life to pay it off. So at the moment Im on about £16k but its a random job and getting made redundant at end of year! lol
Blimey
Wish id went to uni, tis alot easier to get a student loan than it is for me to get a loan being employed full time
plumber60
if you aint got the money, dont spend it Interesting viewpoint, can you elaborate on that, dood? Im talking about debt in general. If you cant afford it without getting into debt then whats the point?
plumber60
if you aint got the money, dont spend it LOL, weren't you needing money the other day to pay and installment on the car!! So you dont see buying a Ford Escort as absolutely essential EDIT: I still need money for the insallment, somebody buy my damn exercise bike. It takes up too much room anyway, i could have another beer fridge where that damn thing is Edited June 11, 2004 by plumber60
Ex-Finesse
it bugs me when people moan at the government saying UNi should be free etc etc etc.... Me too, because I ain't gonna benefit from them going to Uni! You should dispose of your UCAS form and go and apply for full time, in the real world!!!! neil
All my student loan is in the bank earning me some nice interest. I use the money i get from my part time job and work a lot extra during the holidays. I live at home and drive to uni every day which isnt ideal but i would rather do this than pay out so much which i wont get back by living away. Even so some people spend so much on the non essential for example someone i know has spent about £1000 on computer games and consoles this year. He does not seem to mind and thinks its funny when he goes to the bank and sees he is £900 (current account overdraft) in the red at the last look with all loans etc spent already. cargy
We're still missing comments from some of the people I thought would be inclined to comment. I hope they'll chip in 'cos I'm intrigued. There seems to be just two diametrically opposing viewpoints and I'm sure there must be some in between too. Meanwhile, further food for thought; How do you feel about Regardless of cost, education should be a right for all people? Students should not be penalised because their family is not well off? The percentage of "waster" students deprives genuine students of opportunities and funding?
Mike C
Regardless of cost, education should be a right for all people? Only up until the age of 18, their own choice after that whether or not to pursue it, and should pay Students should not be penalised because their family is not well off? Don't think they are really, there's plenty of opportunities for all, just gotta look into all the options The percentage of "waster" students deprives genuine students of opportunities and funding? Absolutely , but what can be done about it? It's a tough call
Waxmonkey
I'm in student debt somewhere along the lines of £15k. most of that has gone on tuiton fees and suchlike. I dont really agree with having to pay £900 a year to do a course, and then have to take out a student loan just to live. Cant do too much in the way of part time work out of uni and my idea of treating myself is not buying a car, going on holiday, it's buying a new computer game or topping up my phone with credit. I know there's no garuntee I'll get a better job after all this as well, but it's the risk I've taken and I'm sure it'll benefit me later on in life when that perfect job comes along I'll be qualified to get it. Dont agree with having to pay tuiton fees though - surely if were going to get higher paid jobs in the end then we'll pay more in tax when we're in these jobs? You should dispose of your UCAS form and go and apply for full time, in the real world!!!! well that's pissed me off when you get ill and have to go to the doctor's or hospital... where the hell do you think those people learn how to fix you??? i'd say that this is exactly the problem, people don't realise just how much a univesity education means and how much it is needed in some cases what about the blokes who sat down and designed the escort in the first place, or any other cars for that matter, even the guy who sketches the little concepts needs an art/design degree and what about the people who make the cars a reality.. they all need automotive engineering degrees why don't you think before you say something like that?
