South Coast GTi

Thought it was about time i did a thread on my car, so here goes...

My old Mk5 was starting to fall apart, was having problem after problem towards the end, so thought id shop it in and start again.

Decided to stick with an escort, so bought myself a bog standard Mk6 GTi, absolutely mint with no rust at all, and only 65k on the clock. Only problem was that it was time for a new cam belt pretty much straight away.

First job was to get rid of the pea shooter exhaust, so i bought a 3.5" piper backbox. Got my pants pulled down over the price a bit, but thats the problem when you buy stuff brand new...

After that i was a bit strapped for cash, so needed some cheaper mods before i could move on to bigger stuff, so i got myself down the scrappy, and bought a few different splitters. After trying out a few different ones, including a fiesta Mk4 bump strip, and a laguna vented, i decided to be a bit different and opt for a Renault espace one. I also debadged the boot lettering at this point, and upgraded to a 6 speed wiper stalk.

Next it was time to de-tango and lower it a bit, so i bought a set of clear repeaters off ebay, and ordered a -35mm Jamex suspension kit off a guy who came on here advertising that he could get cheap kits direct from the supplier. big mistake. when my kit turned up it was a Mk5 kit, even tho id told him it was for a Mk6.

Anyway, long story short, i couldnt get my money back or the parts changed as the place where i bought the kit went bust, so i had to drive up to salisbury to deal with Jamex directly, and get the right parts. All sorted eventually though, and heres how it looked after it was all on, including the aplitter, and clear reps...

was a much tighter ride, and not as hard as i thought it was going to be which is a bonus.

After saving up a few more pennies it was time for some bigger wheels. id been after some kahn rsr's for a while, but i got a bit impatient and ended up buying a kerbed set, that at least had some good tyres on them. "No problem" i thought, "ill just give them a refurb", so i got my hands dirty and gave them a going over with a sanding down, primer, paint etc:

id never refurbed wheels before, and i was pretty pleased with the results, so i whacked them on and got them balanced etc, only to come out of my front door a few mornings later to find myself with a flat tyre. i knew that they were brand new tyres so there couldnt be a puncture, but on closer inspection i found that one of the wheels had a crack in it! :vangry: i was so f***ed off, because i knew i hadnt done it, so the guy i bought them off had obviously sold them to me knowing they were knackered.

To be fair, i hadnt paid much for the wheels tho, and id got a decent set of tyres out of the deal so i just took it on the chin, and started looking for another set. i eventually found some on PF which were in mint condition, with brand new pirelli's, so i snapped them up, and stuck them on.

Next job was to sort the exhaust out, as my mid box was now blowing, so i decided to go for the full stainless treatment. i eventually found a decent one on ebay for £120, and it was only 3 weeks old:

I put the exhaust on last week, but i dont really like the new exhaust tip to be honest, i prefered my old rolled out one so ill probably change that back at some point, but heres how she looks now...

i havent got any more immediate plans as money is now a bit tight as im saving up to go travelling next year, but id eventually like to add some morettes, sort the brakes out and then start laying into the engine, possibly 2ltr it etc.

looking awesome mate those wheels are well nice, seen them on mutleys and MC_bobs cars! :thumb:

still havent fitted that splitter,.. :pancake:

haha, get your ass into gear, its been months since i sold you that!

cheers for the comments, yeah theyre the same wheels as mutley and mc bobs, ive been after a decent set for flippin ages. had a nightmare putting them on though. i put the rear passenger one on the other day and my locking wheel nut key snapped, so i was driving round on three 15's, and one 17" trying to get it sorted :pancake:

  • 1 month later...

just a bit of an update on the car.

noticed a bit of rust creeping round the lip of the rear arch. same thing happened on my old Mk5 and it got pretty bad so i decided to nip it in the bud.

there was a huge slap of car cancer underneath the bumper that i didnt know about as well, think somebody must have clipped me at some point and it tore the panel underneath slightly, and the moisture was able to get in.

i went out and bought a load of filler, fibre glass, primer, spray paint and laquer and got busy..

first job was to take the rusty areas back to bare metal, so i used a rust eater product from halfords, which did a really good job of clearing the decks...

next was to fill the gaping hole with fibre glass. i wasnt too fussed about getting a perfect finish for this part because it was going to be hidden by the bumper anyway..

after that came the respray. the colour match was pretty good, but i still managed to get a fine seam where the masking tape ended (even though id rolled the edges).

lastly i got rid of most of the seam with a metal compound, which also blended the slight colour mismatch a bit better.

pretty pleased with the results, next job will be to get rid of the slight patch under my spoiler.
