Im running Diskmgmt and its just denying access after a few minutes of the mouse doing its funky blue circle.... here is an image: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a134/2f2fescort2f2f/Untitled-3.jpg Could it be because I need to run it as Admin because I've tried.. it aint happening. any advice on other tactics or programmes would be fantastic. Cheers.
Hezz
you cant partition the c:\ drive if its your bootable drive why would you want to? buy another drive as a slave (unless your using a laptop)
caled
well, you *could* shrink the drive down using a tool such as gparted, but Im not sure why you would want to, really. And so far, you are trying to partition a drive that is a. already formatted and b. in use. If you're on a notebook, then fair enough, but if youre on a desktop its definitely better to do what Hezz suggested and buy another hard drive and chuck it in. caled
If you don't fancy just buying a 4GB pen drive - they're cheap enough - and you don't have a built in SD slot that you could just plug a 4gb sd card into, then you may find the following useful.gparted siteAn Idiots guide to resizing a Vista NTFS partition I'll warn you now, though, backup your data before you do anything
Lee_2f2f
Thanks Caled, will give them a go now, Everything is already backed up, Have a SD slot but no cards.. lol and I dont want to pay out when I can use t/p application to force a partition (if it will work) The reason I want to do it, is Vista is getting worse on this laptop over the past few weeks, Slow... Freezing up.... I have had a clear out of the usual (temp, shortcuts, internet etc....) but no fun...tried uninstalling stuff I dont use and going into msconfig and stopping stuff on startup... So basically in a nutshell, I want to install XP onto the laptop as I feel it will run better (Dell inspiron 1501, 2gb ram & AMD Turion X2) but the other half....... is bitching and wants to use slow crappy Vista.. so im dual booting it.. If I can make this partition thanks for your help fella's ill probably be posting in a bit lol.
caled
you'll need more than 4gb for an xp installation, dependent on what programs you wanna install.I have to admit though, I've not had any serious issues with vista yet. You want us to try and figure out whats up with vista?
Lee_2f2f
You want us to try and figure out whats up with vista? I tried everything, even system restore... no joy. I dont know what was up with it, but its gone now. I backed up all my main data onto my phone (noka n95 8gb... had enough space) Done a clean install of Windows 7 Beta... and its absolutley brilliant, love it all up to now. still getting use to the taskbar though Really appreciate your help fellas thanks, and thanks for offering to look at vista. teh
First off, remove any unessential crap Second, disable Superfetch, Readyboost and Indexing services Third, turn off File Replication Service (Windows Features) Fourth, Run Disk Cleanup 5th, Get "Defraggler" from Piriform and defrag it. Sixth, Get more ram. 1gb IS NOT enough.

Sixth, Get more ram. 1gb IS NOT enough. Where did I say 1GB ram? Windows 7 is running perfect, with no issues at all so I dont need to do all this, its running better than Vista ever has. As for your guide, I dont install anything unessential on it, all my laptop ever has on it is, Windows Live, Office 2003, Sage (for doing staffs wages) & Skype. Does anyone else have the Dell inspiron 1501? if so. have you ever had any problems with overheating? slowness or freezing?? bluliz
Does anyone else have the Dell inspiron 1501? if so. have you ever had any problems with overheating? slowness or freezing?? You will find that most issues are software related, and you have even proved this by putting Win7 on and its smooth. Isnt that laptop originally shipped with XP? Isnt that laptop originally shipped with XP? Special offer from Dell, came with 2gb ram instead of 1, an AMD Turion X2 processor instead of a sempron & Vista Home instead of XP The issues have been prooven that it was a Vista Problem Rob, because ive re-formatted and re-installed Vista 3 times and it done the exact same every time. the laptop is fine now. but now another problem is creeping up regarding the "CPU Thermosit"? Might start new topic.
