Openly admitting to not having insurance?

i dont find it necessary to tell my insurance company that the gearknob is from a ka, or that i have removed the bump strips on the door

or that the brakes on the mk2 have been painted red

Well, today was the big day. After all those years of work she's finally on the road! Arrived to work in the morning, just rigged the electric fan straight to the battery so i could get to new work. Drove it down the dual carriageway and the temperature gauge crept up quite high, so i pulled over and there was a bit of steam out the overflow pipe but the coolant level was still good.. So Mum towed me to work. Forgot my fan switch adapter, so for the moment it's just wired to a relay which operates with ignition. Also during this process the coolant level dropped. So i topped it up, changed the tyres and it had it's MOT and passed, drove it home (couple of miles) and it was perfect, didn't lose any more water, then drove it to ASDA to tax it, then to Tesco to fuel it (no super unleaded in ASDA, Doh!) and again, it was fine, the gauge did creep up a little, so i know there still is a problem, i think the fan may not be up to the task whilst driving, as it sat there idling during it's MOT and with the fan on it barely got out of the cold on the gauge, in the end i had to disconnect it for the emissions test.

So i've got to order a proper temperature gauge and fit it as i don't trust this one at all. Also after filling it up with petrol the gauge decided to stop working, so i'll have a look at that tomorrow.

All in all, i'm chuffed to bits, after all that time of tinkering and changing things, if this is all i have to deal with then that is absolutely fine with me.

Just been for a jolly to see if it got hot again, which it did and as i pulled over and switched it off it started gurgling, so i'm pretty sure there is air in the system. In my lunch hour tomorrow i'll flush it and bleed the system again. I'll probably make a scoop underneath the car at the weekend to direct air into the rad as well.

Sweet! Nice update. Hopefully the overheating isn't too major.

Well i had a look at it today. One things for sure, the rad cap is no good. It's pissing coolant out the overflow pipe, i don't think it's sealing very well, or it's choosing it's moments. It's very odd though as i was stuck in traffic today and the temperature was perfect.

I ordered a rad cap last night as that's one of the few things i have never changed and for the money, it was just worth doing. I do still think there is an air lock somewhere, i'll take it to old work this weekend and give it a good tune up and once over. Still chuffed to bits with the old girl though, certainly turns a lot of heads and gets a lot of the old boys grinning.

Been driving her around for a bit, absolutely love it, such character and good fun.

Rad cap arrived, fitted that this morning and took it for a longer run than it ever has before and it didn't over heat, so hopefully that's the end of that problem. The battery charge light has been on, i tested the alternator and it was only producing 10v without even putting the lights on. So i've been hunting for a replacement in the mean time, but i wanted a higher output than the standard 36Ap/h.

On my way home today she started spluttering and the lights went very dim and she cut out about a mile from home. My own silly fault for still driving it when i knew it wasn't charging, hey ho it's all part of the fun. Called up Dad and he came down with the jump leads, connected it up for 15 minutes or so, disconnected the electric fan and gunned it home, she made it and i finally found the limitations of the front suspension, i got a bit of understeer and locked up. Crap old rubber on the front i think. I'll replace them next pay day.

At home now and trolled the internet and found a '70s Land rover alternator, a high output version (65A) and it looks pretty identical fitment to the Imp, even down to the same connector on the back. £68 later, hopefully it will be here early next week. That should also help with the cooling problems, seeing as though my electric fan and pump have only been running on 10v.

Couple of pictures for you.

This is at work, i came round the corner and thought someone had stolen it until i got a bit closer.
