Alternator arrived today! Horray!

Had a quick look under the bonnet today and it's a perfect straight fit. It's a bit dark to be doing it now and the only light is my phone which i can't hold and work with so i'll fit it in the morning before work. Happy Chap! I'll have to go for a bit of a run on Sunday to check the cooling is alright and then i can stop watching the gauge!

  • 2 weeks later...

Good day on the Imp today! The cooling was not cured by the rad cap, although it was better and it did need one. All hoses were getting hot except the bottom, so suspect blocked rad. The car would sometimes cut out under braking too.

Pulled the bottom hose off and shoved a jet wash up the rad, it has unblocked it a bit, maybe not all of it but it's certainly better. Stripped the carb, slow running jet was blocked, cleaned it all up, set up the mixture and idle. Set up the ignition timing and drove home.

The cooling is better. I'm not sure if it's cured yet as i'm currently relying on a 1976 gauge which weren't even accurate out the factory. It did get near the 'red' just as i was landing home but it did take a lot longer to get to that point and when i stopped it wasn't spitting anything out the overflow pipe, so i'm yet to see if it's the gauge or what. But all pipes were hot now.

The car is much smoother now, drives lovely.

Pay day hopefully Monday so i will get a pair of front tyres and possibly a rad.

would it be cheaper to get a genuine imp rad or make one for something else fit perhaps?

i cant imagine imp parts are easy to come by lol

I haven't checked the compression but the engine running is sweet. i did do a hydrocarbons check while at work and there was 33HC's in the expansion tank, which is naff all.

Well, a front rad is more efficient but it's a lot of work, especially as it's my daily now.

Imp parts are easy to come by, i'm just struggling finding someone to post me one!

Bought the rad today.

Also used a work mates Infared temperature gun to see just how hot my Imp was getting. When my gauge read high i stopped and checked it. Hottest hose was 80 degrees and the head was about 70 degrees. Bottom hose 30 degrees, the new rad should cure that part and i've ordered a more reliable gauge too. Gotta love pay day!

Also, i loved playing with my mates infared temperature gun so much, i had to get one. It will be useful for racing too.

Well. I'm not a very happy bunny today.

Took the rad out and fitted the cowlings/stone shields to the new one. Fitted it back in the car, poured the coolant in and it started pissing out the bottom.

It is leaking from the bottom hose connection on the radiator. Take it back out, fit the old rad.....

On a plus side my gauges arrived today and i'm pretty happy with them.
