Fitting questions, Mk5b

Hi, bit of a newb question but I haven't a clue about Escorts, just got one after my 2.0 megane coupe blew up. I've got a Mk5b 1.6 Serenade (don't think I could've bought a worse model) and have got a Mk6 front bumper off ebay, will this fit on alright?

 

I've also got the standard Escort spoiler to fit, some spats for my rear bumper and some Gti skirts. As I've got a 5dr, will the skirts go on ok are are the going to require modding? Are there any other mods people can recommend to make it look less of a Grandad mobile? It has some nice Raceline alloys which were on when I bought it.

If it's a MK5b, the MK6 bumper won't work unfortunately. It will physically bolt to the car, but won't line up with the lights and things. You can fit the bonnet and headlights, but you'd need to weld on some brackets to fit the headlights, and the wiring is different. Alternatively, you could fit the headlights and bumper from a MK5 RS2000/XR3i, which will give it a nice look at the front, and is a pretty simple swap. The bumper bolts right on, as do the headlights, but you'll need to swap the wiring plugs over too, but the wires are colour coded, so it's pretty easy if you can solder.

 

The GTI skirts should fit straight on. If you were fitting 5dr skirts to a 3dr, then you'd have to trim them slightly, but fitting 3dr skirts to a 5dr is a straight screw/rivet on job, and obviously 5dr ones will fit straight on.

 

A little bit of lowering, coupled with the above and your wheels will have it looking pretty decent I reckon. The only other thing worth noting, is that a lot of MK5b Escorts have a pretty spazzy looking exhaust exit. To get round this, you can take the bumper from an XR3i/RS2000, as this has a normal exit like most MK6s have. Then you can fit a stainless exhaust while you're at it too, just to complete the look!

I was told it was a Mk6 and that the Mk6 bumper would fit straight on, but i've since read that the Mk6 doesn't exist and that I have a 5b. Looking at the guide on here, it look like thats what I have. I'll have to stick that bumper back up on ebay then and start looking again

Correct. 1 point for that man. Either Mk5, 5b or 6.

The MK6 bumper has two areas that meet the bonnet and curve around the lights/grill. The 5b is flat straight from 1 side to the other. As pointed out it wont fit unless changing the whole front end to a MK6 OR getting handy with a jigsaw and some fibreglass.

An old aftermarket bumper I had I converted from MK5b to my newer MK6. You could do the reverse or just get another bumper!

if u guys memba correctly the very very last of the escorts had the digital dials from the mk5 fiesta and th funny triangle 'finnesse' wheels. some of them are registered later than early focus' but i spose thats just like old unsold escorts. maybe thats where the confusion lies i dont know

Its much simpler than that.

 

There are 7 versions but the mk's only go to 6.

 

Instead of going mk1 ,2 3 4 5 6 7

It went mk1 , 2 3 4 5 5b 6

 

The 5b was only a facelift model so only 6 actual models 1-6 plus a 5b facelift.

just as peawookie says there, Im sure the focus's will see the same errors in coming years with the first two versions actually being the same model with the second being a facelift, Ive already heard some refer to the latest model as the "Mk4" when in actuality its the "Mk3", its prior boxy shaped on being the "Mk2", the one with headlight + indicator before that being the Mk1.5 and the first being the Mk1 obviously.

 

the differences on both examples (the mk1 & mk1.5 focus and the mk5 & mk5b escorts) were so superficial and cosmetically simple that they couldn't really be designated as different models in much any sense of the word.

 

the "judge a book by its cover" phenomenon can be blamed for the mistaken belief in a mythically created seventh incarnation of the escort.
