RobMk6
Got a hard drive out of my partners laptop that doesn't seem to be working, Got it plugged into another laptop and a caddie and it seems to start spinning up then stop, starts, then stops etc.... Laptop doesn't even see it. Is it dead? Just it's got all her documents and photos on etc.
sidrick
Doesn't sound good like. Your data is only as good as its last backup

PeeWee
Not sure anything was backed upUnwise.Anyone with files they wish not to lose should have some form of backup. With many companies offering 5gb cloud space for free these days there is no excuse. Unless your caddies at fault or something else unlikely the HDD b0rk3d, only option to get the data off now would be very expensive. Shes not along so many people dont backup, including me, I have 1 drive for windows and another for all my data, photo's films music etc, years worth I should really back it up, keep saying I will.... PeeWee
Naylor has a good point, it is possible the caddy is faulty, I thought I had a dead drive when I bought a cheapo caddy from eBay, turned out the drive was fine but the caddy was faulty. If your really stuck rob your quite welcome to post the drive to me & I will do everything possible to extract the data for you.Totally up to you mate? caled
Its likely the disk platters themselves are actually fine (and therefore the data), but the drive control board is fried. Its possible to swap over the PCB with one from another drive of the same model, if you can find one on ebay or somewhere.
RobMk6
Totally forgot about this topic! I'd rather not Pete as there's certain images on there we believe etc Also, if I no longer have the cover to the HD is there any way of finding out the part number/model? Typing the random numbers on the drive into google yields nothing. We still have the laptop it came from however the display is kaput. CheersRob
shawdreamer
with the prices of external drives shockingly low nowadays your always best off having on kicking about your desktop and atleast a hefty sized flashdrive for a lappy (this coming from a complete techphobe)..... nothin worse than loosing all your accumulated porn videos in one foul swoop. mess
when you plug it into a different laptop, have you tried re-scanning for it in 'disk management'? had it before on one of mine, it was nearly dead, found it on disk management and managed to get my files off using r-studio recovery software
RobMk6
Pete, I'm trying to find an identical drive to try and swap parts over to try to recover the data that way. I've tried plugging into different laptops and with a caddy, it popped up once but when clicke on the icon it took ages to load so left it overnight, now it does nothing but click. Shaw, as for having spare drives etc, two years ago I used to dl loads of films/music etc and had a 2tb drive almost full, leaving enough space to backup my entire laptop, so one day my laptop does completely, hard drive fried... Thought to myself 'well it all backed up' gets new laptop..... Plugs hard drive in aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.... Pop my external drive died :-(
PeeWee
Opening a hard drive in less than dust free clinical conditions is a fail anyway.

Rob, with all due respect, there's nofuckingway you're swapping hard drive internals. Your options are: 1 - Pay a data recovery company to take a look2 - Put it down to experience, destroy and bin the drive. Due to to the expense of 1, 2 will be where you arrive. Working in IT I've been there, done that more times than I'd care to remember.
