Mike-evans
Noticed a patch of oil under my car, quick look under and I find quite a heavily wet sump area.... First thought was gearbox seal and gearbox oil is leaking out...........If the clutch was wet from leaking gearbox oil, what would be the signs? slipping? When I fitted my 2.0l approx 2 months ago, there was no sign of leaking oil seal.. Area which is wet with oil is where gearbox bolts to the engine...Engine oil level has dropped... Im yet to get underneath and see whats going on, but took some photos earlier on my phone.......They aint the best pics but you'll get the idea.. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr167/mike-evans/20121129_153610.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr167/mike-evans/20121129_153636.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr167/mike-evans/20121129_153641.jpg
hicksy
At first glance id say its gearbox oil, but looking at the colour of it id say engine oil. Unless the gearbox oil is manky.
etrebus
just because the oil is dripping off the bottom dosnt mean it cant be comming from the cam cover and running down .worth having a look from the top
SLEEMAN
if the oil doesn't smell terribly its not gearbox oil! so it could well be the crankshaft seal on the flywheel side thats gone and leaking engine oil! is the clutch slipping at all? but if its only leaking slowly it may not affect the clutch!! Mike-evans
Clutch is not slipping when I go up throught the revs.. When Im changing down, and only notice it in second gear, as I lift the clutch pedal up and engage the drive, I get a judder through clutch pedal..... How do I confirm if its engine oil or gearbox oil? Is it just by smell?

Mike-evans
Just been out to the car, defenately smells like engine oil, and that matches my engine oil level drop.. Theres no oil running down from rocker cover gasket... So, either crank seal behind fly wheel 8o or could it be sump gasket?? Mike-evans
How hard is it to remove the flywheel? Can it be done without an air gun?
Stu
My money's on rear main crank seal.
Mike-evans
My money's on rear main crank seal. Yep and mine, thats why I asked how hard is it to remove the flywheel? Box out, clutch and flywheel off, old seal out and new fitted - is that what needs to be done?
