Have Rob holding the hub / brake end :thumb:

:thumb:

Now now, less of the "just smilies" :tired:

Are you blind or just stupid? As there is clearly a modified quote in their which has been highlighted, therefore it is not a single smiley post  .

You got it in and running yet Ralph?

Yes true smart @rse, but they werent his words, his contribution was just a smilie :thumb:

Once again, you are wrong. You should really learn how to read. You can clearly see he has inserted the word 'Rob' into that quote. Therefore, his contribution is more than a single smiley :thumb: .

Well at least the engine is in there :P .

Scott - you can STFU and FO considering you turned up at 4pm!! Good one

PS> you're probably still at my house!!! Yes yes.. :O

Right - I took the day off Friday and got on with it.

I refitted the escort clutch.

I swapped over to the orion gearbox to avoid engine mount and starter issues.

I started buildling up the engine with the orion brackets for alternator, engine mounts etc... Alternator bracket on the escort had the air con, your see.

Whilst doing this I noticed a problem. The 1.6 and 2.0 engines blocks were different shapes, and there was a large area where the starter sits at the back whilch was open, and anything could get in between the gearbox bellhousing and the engine, and around the flywheel and clutch. fcuk.

SO...... swapped back over to the escort gearbox, swapped the mounts to the subframe from the escort to the orion, and got back to building the engine up!

By 2.30pm, we were ready to put the engine in, and by 5.30pm it was in and all secure.

Didnt touch it on Saturday, due to being very hungover! :thumb:

Sunday, Scott kindly helped, and from midday to about 8pm, we fitted new healight and sidelights, new lower arms, refitted the suspension and driveshafts, fixed up the cossie brakes with their 2mm spacer washers in the banjo bolts to avoid them becoming thread bound, and got the wheels back on.

Gear linkage is causing agro, however. The only bad point in a good weekend.

Now I've basically just got to build the engine back up with all it's ancillaries, fill with fluids, bleed as necessary, and enjoy! :O :)

Cheers to Japeye for his help :thumb:

This weekend I hope! Manifolds, alternator, starter, wiring.....

Starter is now on the back, and I've used a load of escort water pipes as the orion ones were filthy.

The escort has become a donor for the orion, but lots will be replaced anyway, like the mounts and hoses, so no worries :)

Needs to be used weekend after next for this double date!

  • 3 weeks later...

and for all those people goin on about driveshafts... not 1 cv boot was touched, drain the gearbox oil, released the hub away from the shock, lower arm and trackrod, then undone the brake line, and with ralph pulling on it, and me levering the shaft (complete with both cv joints attached) away from the gearbox. easy! :thumb:

please tell me it wasnt just you that came up with that

well i had no other choice, the hub nut wasnt coming off by any means, plus we didnt have the right tools, so i had to improvise

cant beat the old grinder

i always replace them unless they are pretty much new, so i grind the tab off too :)

Ralph, that gap will e due to a missing plate, you should have a thin plate between every engine and box, find one for a car with front starter to cover up hole at rear, and rear starter to cover up hole at front, etc :thumb:

and how come you have to use a crow bar to take the shafts out???

as i said on the phone, take off the clip holdng the boot on the shaft at the gear box side, and pull the boot back gently and slowly pull the shaft out, leaving the hub in the box, this way you need not drain the box/spill fluid over your garage/driveway :thumb:

Pics were taken at the start of last Friday! More work has been done since!

There have been many problems due to 2 items in this conversion:

1. The escort gearbox is being used.

2. The 2.0 mondeo inlet manifold is being used.

The escort gearbox means the starter motor is now on the back. There fore the original wiring didnt fit, and was actually entirely different to the escort wires! The easiest thing was to use the thick wires from the escort! So I swapped that over but then the secondary fuse box wouldnt match up because the starter wires were designed for different battery terminals!!!!!!

I had to draw home made wiring diagrams to get it all wired correctly

SO... I notice I can swap the mount for the secondary fuse box over, so it fits again! That's about the most pedantic bit of the whole conversion (so far!).

Fitting the 2.0 inlet manifold has also been a game due to the fuel filter location! Is on the subframe on the orion (by the rear suspension on the escort) so I had to modify this, as the manifold fouls it! I've got more to do on it yet, but it's nearly there. I dont want it rubbing, as it'll eventually wear through the manifold plastic! 8o

Still to do:

Slight mod to fuel filter holder needed.

Fit TB, plastic inlet pipe and filter.

Change air temp sensor plug for escort variant.

Finish clipping all sensor wiring back in.

Fit O/S driveshaft - seems reluntant to go in fully! X(

Fill with fluids.

Bleed P/S fluid.

Fit new battery.

Turn key! :O
