Popped the bonnet "oh it's got air conditioning on it, what a pain in the a55"

Started taking it to bits to hunt for the water leak, not head gasket, looks to be somewhere around the water pump, so went to take the pulley cover off, but the air con belt tensioner stops us getting the plastic cover off, to take the tensioner off you have to take the compressor off, so i did, then you can see the bracket that holds the tensioner, held on by three bolts, went to do the most awkward first and the spanner touches the steering rack before i can crack it off and there is no room for the socket because the engine mount is in the way, so after lots of tries with various tools i started to look for other ways to get at it and looks like if i get the starter out i may have enough room. So i'll do that tomorrow as it was getting quite late (just got in)

Lovely by the way!

How come that cossie engine doesnt look like, well the red top cossie im so used to seeing?

It's a later small-turbo engine. The visual difference is that it has a plastic cam cover.

It also has a more modern ignition system (coilpack)

Ahh well that explains that!

Took the starter out, gave me just enough clearance when i put a spanner on a spanner, managed to crack it off, so got the tensioner out the way and the cover came off. Water leak is out the bottom of the thermostat housing, will get it in bits tomorrow.

  • 2 weeks later...

TVR turned up today, didn't start after it got to Le Man. Turned it over, sounded like lack of compression. Checked the compression 1 cylinder on each bank is down, suspected bent couple of inlet valves, or something similar.

Sierra Cossie came down, needs race prepping for Silverstone Bentley Meeting. Now, it needs an engine rebuild, he's been revving it to 8000RPM with hydraulic lifters. (Cams drop off at about 7000RPM i think and 7500RPM tops for the lifters) But we haven't time to rebuild the engine for Silverstone, so we're putting some new lifters in it, told him to stick to 7000RPM and he's gonna do one more race on it as it is and we'll be having the engine for building afterwards (I think making them solid lifters with new cams as he seems to like 8000RPM so much) So ive had the cams and followers out, we've got a set kicking about at work we're gonna put in, tomorrow i think.

Also got a work bench built and internet is up and running.

could i just come n like...hang out for day lol looks so interesting

Of course.

Went in for a bit today. Decided to carry on with the TVR, i still wasn't convinced that the low compression on two cylinders was the problem. It was decided to go back over what the AA man had done. So i checked the firing order to find the plug leads were the wrong way around, so sorted that out, checked the spark and it was a bit weak, i see they'd put the old distributor cap back on, so i put the new one back on it along with a 'mock up' coil and it fired into life and sounded, quite nice.....For a bloody old Rover V8.

I got a video, but i can't be bothered to upload it to Youtube, it's not that special. It's on Facebook page anyway.

Mikes trophy. We built him this as he was the first to blow up a Saxo engine (they don't go to 7000RPM standard for long) That 'S' shaped thing is a valve by the way.

Sierra Cossie - Cleaned the inner arches as they were a state (like the rest of the car, poor thing) Gave it a spanner check as i know the owner would never ever have done one, caliper was about to fall off etc. Followers are ready to be fitted, just didn't have the oil can at this place, so that's tomorrow.

Escort Cossie's water pump is on, can't go any further because we need a bit of hose, also at the other place.

Started inspecting the Quattro gearbox.

Didn't get much done today, lots of running around to do.

EsCos is back together and washed being picked up tomorrow. Can't get in touch with the TVR guy for him to come and collect it. SierraCos has had a helicoiled cam cap stud (it just pulled out as i was screwing the nut in) so that's ready to be put back together.

Also had a bit of a worry as the owner said it only ever reached 17 pounds of boost, so checked it and the wastegate is opening at 2 bar, then, sitting at the back of the car, it's got this silencer on it with like, a 3.5" (maybe bigger) diameter pipe on it, with a pissy little hole in the middle, so, that's got to be changed at some point.

Don't forget the pictures Chris.
