Series One RS Turbo Restoration

Had a few hours on the car today, and using a combination of an engine hoist and roof hoist the engine is now out. I used the engine hoist to take the weight of the engine whilst undoing the bolts for the arms, rear engine mount, and ARB set up, then lowered it down whilst lifting the car with the roof hoist and rolled the shell backwards to clear the engine.

No massive dramas, but nice to see how clean the engine is.

 

Engine bay is now bare aprt from one or two bits which will be removed tomorrow all being well.

I have been speaking with FROST regarding the under floor treatment and protection and think we have come up with a winning combination using a POR-15 system which will leave a high quality, durable finish. So I will be ordering this over the next week.

 

Tomorrow I'm planning on getting the tank out, rear arms and rear suspension, then in a couple of weeks I'll get it over and move onto the underside.

Yeh its turned into a bit more than planned, but hey it may as well be done right, although I can see I won't want to drive it when its done :pancake:

 

A few hours this morning saw the suspension and the fuel tank out. The tank I was dreading, expecting the worst to be hiding behind it, but in fact it looks really good, as does most of the floor!

It was a bit difficult to remove the filler from the tank due to the jubilee clips being gunked up and massively rusty.

I think, seen as I wasn't a fan of lying underneath it, that I will rebuild the rear end and refit when the car is on the spit, and this should save a lot of bother down the line.

Only just started reading but I couldn't help but notice how you went about the front passenger wing repair.

 

aren't you a bit worried about shell alignment?

 

you cut away most of the outer and inner wing material with the strut still in place, worse case scenario the tension from the strut and spring will force the strut top back slightly but even a slight movement there will seriously screw up the way the car behaves later.

 

granted you might mention putting the lot on a rack later for straightening as I read on (probably advisable anyway given the extensive repairs youve undertaken) but just incase ya haven't thought about it it might be worth you while before you approach completion?

Theres no need, as the measurement reference points hadn't moved, and is true between the sides so I am happy with it.

 

The engine was blocked from the underside so there was no weight on the shell itself, but the chasis rails/ firewall provides the structure which were untouched. I maybe didn't show in the pictures, but the points of contact up the top of the a pillar from the firewall remained in place. Its mostly cosmetic parts we have replaced.

 

The chap that's doing the work with me has been prepping motorsport cars for years, so I have 100% confidence in him and his work :)
