exhaust noise

I have a Mongoose 3.5 rolled in zorst on my 2.0l escort. Its a quiet exhaust, however thats relative to other options and the 5" tailpipe version is not quiet.

I wouldnt spend too much time caring about the sound of a exhaust because for the most part all you hear is the engine, other people hear your exhaust, my missus borrowed my car once and drove past the house and it sounded beautiful, I have honestly never heard it like that before, I replaced my induction kit with a factory airbox to try and hear my mongoose more but I could still hardly hear it over the engine.

Through tunnels I can hear it but other than that its sound merges with the engine. If you want big sound get a big tailpipe or remove the centre box like Stu said.

Edit: Forgot to say, it sounds quite loud on the overrun, it did when it was fitted to my 1.6 too and when I first fitted it to my 1.6 it was massively louder than the stock unit.

Also when I went out in JC's 4" 4-2-1 Decat 2.0 setup at the ford fair it wasnt alot louder, sounded different and possibly more beefy, I think alot of us are immune to the noise now.

When you say the sound vanishes do you mean the engine covers it up? I would say the same with most setups, the engine after 4-5k rpm is so loud anyway.....

you want to hear mine! it's loud from idle to the red line unless you're cruising along.
