shawdreamer
no, the insides of the box fell apart, so i pulled the horse hair out and welded the tail pipe back, but it failed the mot for being tonoisy, so had to put another back box on it. oh thank god......... the world cant take another SteveMo
scottybo
supersport is selling the protech 4-2-1 and scorpion cat back, drop him a line
Neil-Serenade
I went to get just a stainless steel middle pipe fitted this morning and it turns out the cat was knackered and causing the rattle. Bit of a schoolboy error on my behalf but I just assumed it was the middle because not only was it scraping but the last exhaust I had fitted before my new back box was a back and middle so just thought it was bound to go so soon after having a new back box. So now looking for a new cat. Can you get these in stainless steel and how hard are they to fit. Cheers.
scottybo
no unfortunately you cant get a cat made of stainless steal, maybe like a one off sports cat type thing you can buy stainless decats though theyre super easy to change. 2 bolts up the top on the manifold, and 2 bolts on the bottom where it bolts up to the rest of the exhaust.......more importantly though, now u have a stainless centre and nice big back box, does it sounds sweet? Neil-Serenade
No I haven't had anything done as the chap said fitting the middle would be pointless as the cat is knackered. I was only going to have the middle pipe fitted for now and maybe a back box in the future as I've only just had a new one fitted. Having a decay wouldn't interested me as I would have to change it for the MOT. So if I bought a new cat, that's all I would need to do to fit it? Would I need any gaskets or sealent? scottybo
only the 1 gasket for underneath where the cat bolts ot the exhaust. bit of exhaust paste is always advisable. in that case just get a cat back stainless then, once again pm supersport as hes selling the scorpion if urs is a 1.6, then i would personally advise buying a cat for a 1.8 as the diameter of the pipe is quite a lot wider the pipe on the left is from the 1.8, i cut this one up to make a decat because its wider, and the one on the right is from the 1.6http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j432/scottybo1/cat2_zps1eb8252b.jpg
Neil-Serenade
Does the thickness of the pipes make any difference? So the one on the left is a decat which isn't legal and when your MOT is due you swap it for the one on the right?
scottybo
the diameter of the pipe does make a difference. the pipe on the left was at one point, the same as the one on the right, although bigger. i cut the cat out and welded a piece of pipe in its place to make a decat. its not so much that not having a cat is ilegal, you will just not be able to pass an mot without one as your emissions will be too high. so yes i just swap them over at mot time. then go home, wait for it to cool down and swap it back over to the decat (im always so disapointed with the sound when the cats in)
Neil-Serenade
Out of interest, would you have been able to make up a central piece of piping and fit it to a back box? Is it possible to have both ends of piping from the cat stainless steel? I haven't got the facilities to swap the cat to a pipe and back again for the MOT. scottybo
exhaust system on a mk6 goes a bit like this engine -> manifold -> downpipe & cat -> centre section -> back box isnt really any need to change anything in from of the cat to stainless, as the pipe up that end is nice and thick so will be very unlikely to corrode. only time you would ever really change anything in front of the cat would be if you had a nice tubular manifold for an easy life just get a 1.8 cat, and a stainless cat back (centre and rear) then it will sound quite a bit nice, and should give modest gains in throttle response. should feel a bit nice through the rev range. on the 1.6 the exhaust as standard is so skinny it chokes the engine quite badly mines currently a 1.6, with my nice big air intake, decat (made from 1. and cat back. and im much faster than redmex's which is also a mk6 1.6......but hes only covered 20k from new! (although he is slower, his car is so much nicer than mine.....so much nicer lol)
Neil-Serenade
Have you ever tried getting your car through an MOT without the cat because the place where I was going say on their site some cars can go through without one. Also, if I could get just the main cat without the pipe attached, I'm assuming the piping could be made to fit that as well?
scottybo
Ive never tried to go through without one. It takes so little time to swap the pipe over i do it just to be sure. As i said if ur worried about mot time n the like then just stick to a cat back system
bronze4door
i took mine for its MOT without a cat, it was a standard cat with the centre smashed out and it wasn't far off passing the emissions, it then failed on welding too but thats another story if you have a decat where there is no cat present then its an instant fail no matter what the emissions test result weather it passes or not
scottybo
u cant even see the cat on the bmw.....or the decat now as it were. theres a big plastic undertray which hides everything nicely
Neil-Serenade
Just wondering still of there is anyone who could help fit a cat and also the possibility of fabricating a middle pie to replace the middle box. Cheers.
