NES PC

Trial fitted tonight and there's been a couple of developments

You may notice a few things:

2 - And I like this one..... There's a wireless network card (I dont think many/any of the current NES PC's have wireless built inside the case).

Nice touch, spotted this straight away. as well as tinternet hook up this will be prime for streaming media (tho high quality video will probably be a no-go).

Re. The disc drive faceplate, i reckon lee's idea about spraying your current one is the best idea as i was having a root around my pc spares/reject bin for a spare drive to take apart and stick in the post for u but theyre all very different.

EDIT: sorry, just seen that it was actually your idea to spray the faceplate...Lee, im withdrawing your credit sunshine.

makem in bundle and make a mint on Egay....i'd have one (at cost price plus £20/30 :-D)

I'm looking at about £250 in parts (not including the NES itself), plus a good few hours of my time, which I'd probably want more than £20 for, so say £300 all in or nearer £350 including a NES. I doubt many folk would be interested in what is essentially a low spec PC for that price.

It then opens up pottential shit storms should a part fail a few weeks/months down the line.

purely for the novelty :-D if you send all recipts with the PC then they can claim the warranties ETC

  • 2 weeks later...

Wireless desktop arrived so I did a bit today.Once I cut a hole for the VGA and wiring the front USBs it'll be done.

Added and secured case fan (pointing at PSU) and cut a hole and secured the power input.

It looks really good:

Mounted wireless desktop receiver to the top of the case:

And butchered the lead so that it uses the internal USB (front panel) header rather than the back panel ones which would have meant more case cutting, which I want to minimise:

Definitely going to be selling this once it's done, which should be this week, so any interested parties can feel free to PM me.

Well fcuk me, it actually works.

Case is open as I had to take out the wireless card as it wouldn't power up with it in. Card's been kicking about for ages so it's no surprise it's knackered. Ordered another off of Amazon. £7.10 posted so I can't complain!

Installing W7:

Lol, forgot to mention how I got around the VGA>Scart issue.

I bought a new TV (pictured).

is this more a novelty hobby youce done, as i guess the comp itsself couldnt support a huge amount of hardware, i.e, RAM, graphics card, HDD etc?

Well, it's got 2gb of RAM which is fairly sufficient, but can take a single stick, so I guess you could upgrade to a 4gb stick if desired.

HD isn't limited, so if desired, you could install a 1TB internal hard drive.

Graphics is onboard, so yeah, that's limited, but it's not used for state of the art games, and it'll play or display pretty much anything other than brand new graphic intensive games.

The project in general is a hobby. I'm a computer nerd, really, so it was just done to keep me out of the pub and to see how easy it was.

Haha, Sid, I love how you worked out that problem. :D

Looks fantastic, does it perform as well as you hoped? :)

(hoped?? is that even right lol.)

Not really sure how it performs as I've literally just installed W7 and then switched it off.

W7 installed really quickly though, which leads me to think the performance will be fine, but I've never installed W7 before so I've got nothing to compare it to. The specs exceed my needs anyway so it'll be just fiiiiiiiiiiine.

Been popping onto this thread every now and again and have to say I love the the project, very retro cool.

Should do a whole series, DreamCast PC, N64 PC, Original PlayStation PC? Or something really different like a VCR PC lol.

I've had a VCR PC before but shorted the motherboard or the metal casing (facepalm) because I wasn't thinking.

The others, I'd love to do, but realistically, it's an outlay of circa £300-350 each time. I need a car at the moment hence this one being sold. Once I get my car it'll likely be gobbling my wages rather than them being spunked on dremeling 80's console cases

That said, I'd recommend this kind of thing to anyone. There's a real sense of achievement overcoming the obstacles associated with putting a PC in something unconventional.
