dont go anywhere near 8k,they ll be purple and probably less light out put than your standard bulbs.

go for 5k!

showing cutoff the pass side was incorrectly fitted at the time of photo but you can see the drivers side has a pretty decent cutoff.

Yeh but I've had brilliant white before, I want a blue tint to the beam.

How do you incorrectly fit them? Surely it's a doddle just like putting a normal H4 bulb in, only goes in one way.

When's your MOT and are you going put normals back in for it or try it?

the bulb wasnt pushed in fully in the holder.

for mot i'll just unplug bulbs from ballasts remove bulbs and put in the ordinary h4.

Not tempted to see if it will pass anyway? Surely it's possible to hide the obvious HID components and that way you will be tested on how the beam performs and not fails just because they are HIDs?

im sure they would pass.

sure enough to advise him to waste £££?

hope so, because after the law comes into effect he'll have to remove them (even if he removes for MOT then replaces after the ever increasing Vosa checkpoints wont have to much difficulty spotting him on the road and happily take the car off him for his troubles) and have a hugely diminished chance of selling them on as everyone else will be facing the same issues and wont be looking to buy them off him?

OP:

Have you ever observed a MOT test?

they don't just "look" at your headlights, they "TEST" them, they'll know something's not right the instant they turn them on........ the clue is in the MOT title

I havn't observed an MOT for some time now but seem to remember them having some sort of cool box thing with what looked like lenses they place in front of the light to do the tests?

Im sure they test the light emitted as well as then alignment & projection?

By putting them into standard escort headlights you will Pee every other motorist off... by this time next year they most defiantly will not pass an MOT. You look at a h4 bulb you will see there is a deflector inside it... this is there to point the beam pattern down and not to scatter the light... HIDs do not deflect the light at all Youd need a projector lens to even be in ballpark legal

Not only that you don't have lamp washers....

When the police click onto this... and they will.... you end up getting done for construction and use offences. Most likely a CU20 (I have one) which is dangerous parts/accessories not related to steering or braking. carries 3 points and a £60 fine...i say this because it causes danger to other motorists by burning their retina's off :(

Yes... a beam tester... checks the alignment of the beam pattern

The kit is around £100, and it I have to remove them permunantly then so be it, Ive been moddin escorts for so long now £100 down the drain is nothing and I can still use for show use. Ive been driving around with MOT fail indicators for ages now because im trying to get the inner lenses for my Morettes and fit them in there, currently they are cabled tied to the grill, not my work but the only solution I have - I have now finally bought some inners so I want that sorted soon once they arrive, my point is im yet to be stopped and this is something thats so obvious during the day and night.

Im pee'd off by so many cars headlights, im dazzled by so many Audis and Beemers and to be fair loads of new cars, seriously its annoys me so much when I get a head ache off my rear view mirror cause of the audi thats 5 million miles away behind yet still fking with my sh1t.

I ask about the MOT because I know they use equipment to check beam pattern etc and all that they always have, my mate failed the other day for a poorly adjusted light, I heard so many stories of people here who have sailed through their MOT's and HID are illegal now apparently. Im yet to speak to someone who has failed an MOT with after market HID's fitted.

Im happy to fit them and report back what happens, whether it passes MOT and if I get stopped. It wont be happening for a while anyways because my list is so long of parts which is why I asked Bongo if his MOT was soon cause I wanted to see what happened.

Its not really regarding your MOT just yet.

Laws such as this take time to filter down and to be instigated by individual test centres.

Your concern should be being caught on the road.

The MOT centre will eventually fail you but all that means is driving off, changing to standards, come back, pass...... its at most an inconvenience.

VOSA and the POLICE however are working closely now to enforce laws regarding vehicle condition on the UK's roads and their spot checks and the chances of being spotted on the road with illegal lights is becoming increasingly likely.......and if they pull your car with illegal lights, they wont let you drive off on a promise, they cease your vehicle there and then, down to the impound it go's, you get £125 quid bill, a fine for driving a dangerous vehicle (which btw in case your unaware is exactly what you'll be doing) and the very likely chance of points going on your license.

by my recon'in that ain't £100

that's

100 - for the lights

125 - seizure charge (minimum)

£££?- increase in insurance premium for the points you now have

60 - fine (minimum)

and that's not even taking into account you might not retrieve your motor immediately and have it immediately corrected to uk standards.......that's another £12-27 a day storage fees depending on whether the police store it or VOSA do.

if that's not a worry there's the added embarrassment of having your car parked at the side of the road for the remainder of the day with a large sticker on its window saying "Illegal vehicle ceased by VOSA" to put off other illegal car drivers.

......Oh and btw......... VOSA don't have to catch you at all, other drivers can shop you by phone.

so think about how much you don't like being dazzled then ask yourself..... if its you being blinded by a cars illegal lights........ wouldn't you be jotting down the reg and handing it to VOSA?, I know I will when the law comes in.

thats a chunk of hard to swallow food for thought if you ask me?

Shaw, firstly thanks for writing such an informative post.

All valid points but the cars I am being dazzelled by isn't actually the boy racers with they 10000k kits, it's the fking brand new cars with stock kits fitted. Just got home from work now, must have been dazzelled about a millions times on the m5, new mondeo, Audi TT, Audi A4, Audi A3, 1 series and a lorry. All stock. And on that subject when did it become ok for lorries to be lit up lik Xmas trees? Fk me there is some extravagant ones, so we can't put dope ass neons under our cars but a lorry can have a fking hug shamrock lit up behind the driver omfg!!

Do you know what shaw, I'm gonna take the risk but only if it passes MOT, all MOT test centres test your lights so a fail is a fail, so if it passes the liklyhood is that other drivers won't be dazzelled so it's less likely I will be reported or stopped. If I fail MOT I won't even entertain having them installed.

However I take everything on board you have said and if all those things happen at once you can say you told me so and I will certainly be out of pocket and pretty annoyed with myself and no one else.

I know my attitude is a little bit off here but I'm so annoyed that stock cars are allowed to dazzell the shqt out of me and it be ok.

My dads got a brand new Insignia, the lights autoadjust and they also switch to full beam and dipped automatically. It's BS though because the oncoming car has already come round the corner before the computer dips the beam, that Pees me off and I'm the passenger, surely that is rubbish?

There's too many contradictions for me!

Perhaps worth visiting an optometrist? You do get a bit of glare from OEM HID's when they go over bumps as there's obviously a slight bit of latency with the auto level adjusting, but not constant glare.

naylor mot is next year april or may.

i do know about all the legalities og hids, but on the kit i have the bulb is fitted with a deflector underneath it switches to high beam by moving a metal tab which opens a gap in the deflector below, but i can honestly say there is no constant glare head on,maybe its because if the morette crystal lenses? and i have seen hids put in standard escort headlights and that is a joke the light scatters everywhere.

you can see in this almost level picture that there is no glare.
