Favourite mark of escort

The grill is the best thing about it. Remember when the mk5b came out, it was what the original mk5 should have looked like. Mk6 just did not look right from the front, especially the standard models. The way the bonnet was pumped out and the grill was too small. I remember at school then, kids were saying the mk6 looked like a fish when it came out then.

Mk5b is my least favourite. It cnt make its mind up. And that horrible oval grille thing at the front!

Cant believe no one has mentioned the mk2. My favourite escort is a mk2 rs1800

favourite has to be escort cosworth (lets not get into the debate of whether its even an escort or a Sierra), least favourite is mk6 GTi not so much becuase of the looks, quite like a sorted mk6, it just doesn't deserve the GTI badge in my opinion.

a ford shouldnt even have a gti badge imho. Gti's r for vw and peugeots

irespective of whether it deserves a sporting badge or not. Why did they brand it a gti. What was wrong with the old sport brands like xr/rs or even just the 'sport' model

Exactly. Just a marketing exercise, there was already a mk5 xri and mk5&6 rs so they had to do something different so it didn't get directly compared. Reminds me when my dad bought a 'sport' Laguna years ago. Nothing more than a diesel with alloys, a few extra bits of body work (I.even spoiler) and a badge.

Think the GTI badging came as they still had loads of RS2000 bodykit stock. They still wanted to have a sport model, but poor sales of the RS2000; due to insurance etc. and they never bothered to re-engineer it to meet new emission and sound levels. So they just used the plain 1.8 Escort and as someone above mentioned, tarted it up.

for me at least, the insurance on a gti and an rs2000 are pretty much the same give or take literally a few pounds.

dont get me wrong no one is slagging off the gti itself, it just should have been called the mk6 xr3i, and fitted with the 130 engine

imho

It may be the same now, but back in the 90's it was a big difference.

re GTI they had killed of the XR brand as it had a very bad name for being broken into very easily.. start of the joyride era.

ive had one of all models except mk1.. i loved my mk2s and id love a s1 turbo.. s2 turbo was pants in comparison.

mk5 xr/rs were lovely as well but the std models were crap looking

never really liked mk5b myself followed by mk4

Well, this one has not a direct answer... I LOVE mk2's,although never had one. I also loved mk3's, I had an xr3 in black for some years and still have a soft spot for them... I also prefer mk5b from mk6, mk6's are too "curvy" for me, I prefer the more old school look of the 5b. Perhaps with a bit different front grille. I would like to have a cosworth escort sometime in the future, although they are rare nowadays in Greece, you can't find a genuine cossie anymore, most are moded 3 doored ones...
