daveg
Hi guys im new to the board. Quick question about keys. When i brought my mark 6 i was only given one key. I didnt think this was a problem at the time but when i read the hand book it told me that i need a red master key in order to make a copy that would start the engine. I went to my local ford and they told me it would probably cost £700-£800to get every thing sorted! Has anyone else been in this situation, will it really cost that much or should i go someware else? Thanks alot, great site.

Chrissyboy
the thing is the immobiliser is in the red key so if you ever lost your key you would be fucked!! I think ford quoted to have all the locks changed and I would imagine they will have to mess about with the immobiliser as well

furry
yes this is true cos this key basicly opens the ecu up for programming, get a copy done asap of a none red key and see if it programmes in.
Chrissyboy
I thought you cant get another one copied if you aint got the red key?
Al
The red key allows reprogramming of up to around 15 more keys only! But it must be a 'chip' type key (from Ford). If you do not have the red master key ,then there is an alternative.Get a couple of copies of the key you got left(the one with the immob chip in it) then 'stick' or tape that Chipped key inside your steering cowl, this will will basically un-immobilise your car permanently. You then just use any of the cheaper copied keys to start the car,as the chip in the tapped up key is stopping the immob from coming on.Not a perfect set up, but better than spending around £500....... RS2000
You can get as many keys cut as you like, problem is you can't teach the new keys the immobiliser code unless you have the red master key What i have done in the past to get over this. get a couple of standard ford keys cut from anywhere. make sure they work.the immobiliser works by reading the chip in the key. so just tape the old key with the chip around the immobiliser and then just use normal keys. Chrissyboy
or you could 'over-ride' the immobiliser
