Imhaving a dilema, i have got a heat bulb to replace having a heat mat, but i just though, you cant have a bulb on 24-7 cause a snake it noctournal, SO im gonna get a ceramib bulb heater thing...

How do i set up a ceramic heater, is it just like a bulb and directs heat with a bulb guard over it, or do i have to do a different set up?

what heating have you got other than the light? as its ok for the heat to drop a few degrees over night providing there is still heat going in.

you need a ceramic bulb and ceramic holder with guard (dare say light guard will fit it anyhoot) other than that put on a stat and its the same as a bulb but no light.

il be putting a light into my boas enclosure when i can be arsed/afford it.

its going to be on a dimming thermostat, best one innit?

There is no other heat going in, hence why im thinking a ceramic one will be best as there is no light, there will be a seperate low voltage bulb in there as well, just to light it up a bit, then later on in the evening there will be the RED moonlight LED's then from 11pm till sunrise it will be dark in there.

thats fine but if the bulb is in the enclosure make sure its guarded to as it will still get warm, and a snake will wrap around it, especially a baby corn and itd be a pain to get off and could do some nasty damage.

sounds good tho iv just got some battery operated LEDs on the bottom of my viv so it just lights the floor but will be getting some good lighting in there at some point. make sure you get pics of moon lights up :)

thank god this wasnt a 'show us your pygmie goat' thread X(

lol say wha?

that i dont know id ask on a forum im sure not much saying that bigger is better, just because the stat will keep it at set temp and if you ever upgrade sizes you dont need to buy another one :)

scince this thread started, im sure 2 people have gone out and bought snakes - so if it was a show us your goat thread - i dread to think what would happen

how about show us your bmw thread, thats half the forum involved there and then

You can get a red or blue heat bulb, I use this, the light wont bother them as they cant see light, especially red...No matter what bulb you use, they will still see the heat as their eyes work like a heat camera, bit like this:

so even if you went out and bought a bright white light, it would still be ok for them as would a ceramic, or red bulb

sorry have to disagree mate, there was even a discussion about this not so long ago on RFUK.

they see things like normal vision snakes with HEAT PITS (corns dont have these) can sense things that are hot (maybe like above pic but not as vision) they however do see things in normal eyesight all be it prob not as good as ours.

they also can see light.

snakes need to be left in darkeness as being in 24hour light is not good for them, dimmer lights can be got away with like the moonglow things but anything brighter can cause stress.

if you have a look or ask about especaly on rfuk they will tell you this, and leaving a bright light on 24hours is a MASSIVE no no.

still searching for exact topic but first page gives an insight ;)

This will be something that will be argued with for years more then, as every nature program I have seen say this too, other wise why would there be a need for the "heat pits"? That would be worthless if they have good sight, plus they go on heat for knowing where the head is and bottom so they can eat it properly, as the head is warmer

yes but they have heat pits AND eyesight AND hearing AND tongue which they use all of when they can.

the way i look at it is id rather be safe than sorry, that meaning no light at night, so either way i wont harm the snake :)

i can see all parts of the argument but if there is the option to do something without !maybe" harming the snake then il do it :)

heat pits are only on some snakes to aid in hunting. a corn doesnt have them.

personaly id have a ceramic heater with a light for day/evening so it can be in darkness at night (obv moon glows are ok)
