I really love this thread!

Its really interesting seeing what goes on with a rebuild like this!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, glad you're enjoying reading it, much appreciated!

This is flippin' awesome  . I dont know a lot engine wise but your posts are informative without baffleing my brain! Im sure there will be interest in another build. Look forward to the next instalment. :thumb:

Cheers for that, much appreciated. I know a lot of people never get to see an engine in such detail so hopefully it's interesting to see what's all in there and how the work is done on it to bring it up to scratch. :thumb:

Looking at how it sits I can see there are going to be clearance problems as it will foul the radiator as it currently is. I would say the flange on the manfold for the Turbo needs to be angled inwards at least as much as it currenlty is outwards. As it stands David is aware of this and it will be altered before it's fitted, most likely when the downpipe is manufactured -

Galaxy Dipstick tube we're going to be using as an Oil Return for the turbo, I've cut it back slightly but left the final cutting to be done once the turbo is sitting in it's final position -

Loosely fitted into place, as I say, it will be cut back to suit the position of the turbo once the manifold is altered -

That's as much as I can do with engine on the stand as the flywheel, clutch and transfer box need to be fitted next, so it's off to the workshop door to be lifted out -

Yes Stu, as it is just now, the turbo is bound to foul on the radiator, it sits too far forward and a quick measure up on my own car confirmed it! However, once the engine is in Aberdeen a company are making up a downpipe to meet the cat so they'll alter the manifold flangle angle to tuck it in tighter when they do that. Although I can weld myself, they'll do it in half the time and do a better job no doubt since that's there main business. Other than that the manifold is a nice bit of kit I reckon.

Looks like a modified after-market Nissan manifold? I'll be honest, i'm not a fan of the transition to meet the incorrect port centres, but for the power goal it's highly unlikely to be a problem. Hell it'd probably do 300bhp without excessive flow problems. I'm just a stickler.

Yes, you're right, it's a 200SX Manifold mated to an RS2000 flange, it's had quite a bit of work to make up for the misalignment of the port centres but I do understand what you mean, if you were aiming for perfection then a bespoke manifold would be a better option. That's the thing with this though luckily, it'll be fine for our power goal and I know similar manifolds have been used for 300bhp 2.3 Turbos, it would be interesting to know what the limits of the manifold are though now that you've mentioned it.

I suspect with the right compression ratio, turbine housing and exhaust system it'd be fine for 400bhp before the back pressure causes det problems. How it flows though and how balanced the flow is a different story! Not as easy to measure.

I'd just noticed Hightower was asking if I'd also be fitting the engine but sadly in this case I'm not, the engine is heading up to Aberdeen to be fitted by a garage up there. However, the owner of the car has promised to take plenty of pics so hopefully I can get some from him and post them up here for you.

At the moment I'm just finishing a full rebuild of a Mk2 Cortina 1600E Crossflow engine which I've rebored, converted to unleaded, etc and next week I'm starting another RS2000 Turbo engine build, this time a 2.0 with Forged pistons and rods. If there's interest in them I'll happily post them up here.....don't want to bore anyone though!

Bore us?! We're not even honed! :nutter: :pancake:

I've just made an awful mess in my pants looking at this, the owner of it must be giddy as owt!!!!

Glad you're not boreed.......or honed!!

another update - the flywheel on our donor engine had seen some slight marking from a slipping clutch and just generally needed tidying up -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0492.jpg

I cleaned up the ring gear, etc by hand and then it was onto the centre lathe -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0493.jpg

Cleaned up nicely -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0494.jpg

Back off the lathe and it's ready to fit -

Flywheel bolted onto the engine, you may have noticed one of the locating dowels for the clutch cover plate is broken off flush. This won't make any difference as the other 2 dowels are still there to locate the cover centrally and once the cover is bolted up tightly the dowels don't serve any purpose until the next clutch change -

Since this transfer box came with the donor engine and we don't know how good it is I opened it up to check it out, it's easy enough to do and makes sense to do it while I had the chance -

:thumb: yet another great update, probualy a very stupid question, but can you bench test this when finished, i just want to hear the sound if i am honest

Cheers! I'll not be running it in on the bench I'm afraid but If all goes to plan I'm intending to travel up to Aberdeen to see it being mapped on the rolling road, even if I don't make it I'll be sure that someone up there takes a camera to video it for you!

Another update as I add the finishing touch to David's engine. I contacted Martyn at Cheviot Graphics (www.cheviotgraphics.com) to ask about making up a set of coil pack cover decals for me, I dropped in a cover and explained what I wanted and 3 hours later got a phone call to say that it was ready to collect! Absolute top service and a nice helpful guy to deal with, he is happy to make up standard and custom coil pack cover decal sets for anyone that wants them.

So.................here is the finished article -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0575.jpg

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0576.jpg

David kindly left it down to me to decide what to do and was happy for me to add my own logo onto it, I went for the standard size and style of lettering for this part with it changed to 2200 instead of 2000, this is done in a brushed stainless steel effect vinyl -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0577.jpg

The Ford Logo I decided to have done with the blue background as it is on a Galaxy rather than just the silver outline as it is on the RS, he made up my own style logo decal and backed it onto some more brushed stainless effect vinyl. I've had the name "Blackspeed" in my head for years to cover anything I do on the performance side of things rather than just general engineering or making styling products so that's why I decided to go for that -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0578.jpg

And this logo is the same as standard but again, done on a brushed stainless vinyl -

http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/David-Newman-2.2-Turbo-RS2000-Engine/0579.jpg

So, after admiring that for a while I decided to fit it to the engine with some dome head stainless bolts, I think it finishes it off just nicely -

Time to get the engine ready for collection, so it was time for one last look at it -
