the rollercoaster ride starts again

wow I havnt updated this for a while have I?

then again I aint done feckall to warrent an update.

well after several days of waiting for some bits an pieces from japland they all turned up in a rush today so I got on with it.

Unfortunetly I cant be arsed downloaded the pics from the camera tonight so that'll have to wait till the mornin.

As of today I now drive a gigantic bluetooth ready mp3 Iphone compatable mobile phone.

spent today fitting a full custom bluetooth recieving fm transmitting setup. with a I68 4g dock fitted into the dash so I can just splash all my tunes onto my I68's 16Gb memory and just slot it into its dock slot and away it go's when I get in my motor, ontop of that there are two additional Usb ports going into a switch blank (when I can finally source some) so I can slot anything from a flashcard, mp3 player and even a external HDD.... very convenient for myself and looks the part too.

saved me blowing a wad on a new HU with bluetooth and HDD compatability, built in onboard 4Gb memory, front and rear usb and be decent looking with atleast as good a sound and play qaulity as my existing Alpine HU.....If such a HU even exists with all that! (that last ones not as easy as it sounds given that Alpine HU's are probably one of the most stable high qaulity sound units Ive ever used)

Ill slap some pics up of the were and hows in the mornin, really not as hard as it sounds.

allmost forgot.....

Stripped my dash cluster right down to parts (removed all the gauges and indicator plates) so I was left with the rear white cluster casing.

then removed all the standard OEM illumination bulbs (inlucing the ones behind the dials and above behind the green filter lense) then installed a flexible Hi intensity strip of blue LED's behind were the dails would sit.

The result when re-assembled was that I no longer have even the slightest indication of the horrid morbid escort dash green glow and instead have rear lit blue instruments, tho the needles can be slightly harder to make out without the above illumination but Ill be solving that later with a low intensity UV LED that will make the needle glow without diminishing the backlit effect.

I think it creates a more subtle effect compared to the often overly bright Plasma setups available....

coincidently the after shot WAS one of the pics I did download....

day....

slightly wobbly night....

and just for the cost of a LED strip....£5 tops, honestly, why do people pay more for "plasma" ffs.

right, a quick walk through

the basic components (as you can see the transmitter has already been built into a piece of acrylic 5mm sheet then fitted in were the heater vent originally was). The transmitter itself has a rear usb and internal 4Gb memory (maybe more), it also has multiple esb signal recognition so can be used with a hub (which Ill be doing)

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25791.jpg

The dock itself took some work as its originally designed for a Iphone 4g and I was using it for a I68 4g (basically a Iphone copy) and that meant that even tho the data cables are identical the I68's is the opersite way round. The dock came out of a Philips Stereo I bought for the living room that is Ipod/Iphone compatable and came with multiple adapter for the various variants... I have seen em on eGay seperately. Basically I bonded a standard Iphone Data cable to its base in reverse.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25792.jpg

didnt have to look pretty as the ugly stuff is hidden anyway.

The transmitter in position with a car light extention permenantly plastic welded at its rear to supply it when IGN on, it has a off memory function so doesnt lose its settings when shut down.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25793.jpg

The phone in question, as you can see its a very close almost identical copy of the Iphone 4g and suprisingly well made, it runs java applications seeemlessly and I cant knock it atall.... course Id have never bought one even tho they are a fraction of the cost as I was happy with my Samsung U700, but the missus went and bought it for me anyway.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25794.jpg

Next I nervously BUT carefully used a dremel to cut away the required slot in the top pf the dash (were the useless parcel shelf type thing is that usualy ends up strewn with change that flys across the dash when you turn corners) then its a simple case of bonding the dock in place and running the usb cable across behind the cluster to the transmitter.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25795.jpg

Phone sits perfect and well supported, doesnt move under sharp turning or dislodge atall, bonus is it all acts as a charger too.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/25797.jpg

I as said will be adding two usb ports into a switch blank below the transmitter so I can randomly connect any other device I want.

this is also possible with any phone that connects via data cable to a pc and can be used as "mass storage"

job done, works a treat.

Really Impressed by all the mods done, no doubt this is all a one off. what other Gadgetry have you in mind? get any more technical going to have to start calling you Q

id there no really loss to not having heaters?

hmmm, other mods, I havnt really thought about it, I usually get bored and have a fun idea and just go with it :pancake:

tho now I think about it I have been playing with the idea of sheet blue lit window glass :glare:

as for the heater vent loss, I honestly dont notice it, you get plenty of flow (more so now) through the up and down vents now so your windscreen seems to clear faster and the lower vents heat the car up plenty....plus my feet stay nice and toasty

Mentioned in another thread about disliking fuses everywhere and untidy wiring all over the place, the kind of thing that invariably happens as you add more and more systems to your motor.

Now mine was as basic as basic escort specs could ever possibly get which meant even more aftermarket wiring than could be expected

so I added:

Remote central locking

Alarm (with ultra's, multipoints, Shock & Vibe sensors)

Electric windows

Boot Release (with additional remote firing feature)

Full closure system

along with other bits and pieces (Ice and the like)

all that accumulated in what could only be described as a mess of jumbled wiring behind the dash and above the fusebox with in-line fuses everywhere, finding a blown fuse became more than a simple task of pulling it and replacing...... blowing a fuse meant a nightmare of tracking wiring and fighting with tiny enclosed spaces.

So I ordered some bits and pieces of good old Egay, started cutting out the masses of in-line fuses and wiring and set about cleaning up and simplifying the whole lot.

The results:

Fastened directly to the back of the lower dash trim, just high enough to hide the wiring and just low enough to avoid obstructing the panel fitment.

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/26430.jpg

Fuses can be reached with the trim in place or for better visual with the trim dropped down

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/26431.jpg

come complete with a weather proof transparent cover and the feed wiring bits too

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/26432.jpg

Only visible indicators are the two small bolt heads that secure the box in place behind

http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/26433.jpg

For under 20 quid and hour and a half worth of work...... not to bad if I say so myself.

.....oh and so so SO much easier, neater, tidier and simpler to fix when something go's wrong

Some fun mods done there, looks like your having a good time with it.

I don't mean to sound rude & may have missed it but is this car on the road as in you drive it now then?

aye I drive it, its been on the road for well over a year now, fully taxed, fully insured and soon to be re-mot'd before this monthes out.

Your not miffed that I havnt used your alloys yet are ya? :pancake:

Their in the back of the car as we speak, new rubber going on them in the nest day or so and then their goin on the car for the next MOT (current tyres have just dropped below legal on the front on the currents and both fronts have been purposefully punctured anyway)

That is the best idea you've had since painting your house! :thumb:

least my motors legal you crim

Did you solder these connections together or just twist em all and shrink it?

Most probably going to do the same but I want to try and find a fusebox with a common supply, so essentially using the one power supply hook up and them multiple outputs.

Well tbh my original plan was to use a aftermarket joint blade fuse and 5 blade relay holder box (most of which use a common rail rig) but after some investigation into price ranging I came to the conclusion that Id be more willing to goose fat my shitring, dress in a mini skirt and walk into the communal cafeteria in broad-moor men's wing singing "Im a yankydoodle sailor"... in a manner of speaking.

....It was costly for my purposes if you missed my point?

Anyway, that size of a setup would have required me foregoing the convenience of having the new box alongside the original due to the limited space and accessibility behind the dash, instead the box would have to go in the boot somewhere, which is something Ive gone to extremes to avoid doing so far (even as far as fitting my stereo's 1000w amp beneath the drivers seat instead of the back of the bench) as I like my boot practical and uncluttered.

There was also the risk of dampness to consider when placing additional electrics, we all know the boots of escorts are notorious for leaks and soaked carpets while the main cab and beneath dash areas are the most damp protected in regards to electronics.

oh and their crimped connectors your seeing with shrink wrap over them....... I usually prefer to solder wiring but it was just more convenient this time round
