smithyandco
Different make of bearing... The boxes look near enough identical... Then again the old one looks in better nick... Might be slightly different on gear ratios... But I can't imagine there being problems...

Might be slightly different on gear ratios... But I can't imagine there being problems... Aye I kinda gathered they were different makes ffs Like I said the variations between the two boxes appear to me to be almost entirely cosmetically based, the original is definetly not in better condition , newun only looks "rusty" in that pic as my moby decided it didnt need the flash for that shot, its actually quite clean and tidy in there, plus the original has some very prominant uneven worn groves on the shaft which makes me think something (I reckon the bearing carrier) wasnt fitted right when you took it into the garage to get it sorted and the resulting damage eventually caused the new "scaletrix" whine As for the ratio difference, Ive been told its so negligable between the 1.4 and 1.6 engines that its not worth mentioning if any exists at all. Ah well..... all I can do is slap it in in the morning and see how it works out, least if I aint keen on it Ill have the day to drag the newun back and swap it out for something else
smithyandco
So it was the garage that did my clutch that fucked it up... I knew it!Took it back to them not long after them sorting it... they said it was due to new oil (old thick oil was "masking problems").He did say "If it's anything I've done, I'll gladely sort it" So avoid 'Dial-A-Clutch' in Winsford then... B*stards!

shawdreamer
smallish update.... New Alloys on (the original 5 point 14" ones that Phil had on it have gone bye bye's on the Si )New Recon'ed box in and working a treat. nice and smooth gear changes and no squeeling budgie, not bad for £45 notes aye freshly finished today half tints on its arse polished out the majority of the minor paint imperfections while I was at it, shiny shiny , should come up a treat once I've resprayed the passenger rear qauter and done a full polish job.http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20400.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20401.jpg on another note, the recent theft from my Si....lets just say, I erm....how do I put this tactfully?... ........ beat ten levels of shite out and in and then back out of the offending individual and if either my gear or £100 worth of notes doesnt find its way to me in the next two weeks.....the shite will be coming in and out once again....then a week after that.....and then, well you get the idea? shawdreamer
since early doors this morning:- changed os front spindle carrier due to the existing bearing feeling a minor bit loose tho not nearly enough to fail an MOT (had a spare carrier with spankin new bearings in anyway) changed both Arb links (both looked like they'd been there since the car rolled out the factory) changed steering rack ball joints (flopier than a 90yr olds codger) wanted to change the lower arms but they aint turned up (annoyingly) consoled myself by getting to work on these, as you can see, they needed a few bits addressing.... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20461.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20462.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20463.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20464.jpg and look, not a spot of primer on the wall....... lucky really as the missus only reluctantly agreed to let me do it there again oh and almost forget......a familiar looking set of 6x9's and a envelope with £100 miraculously found its way to my doorstep while I was in the back shed during the spraying. how very perculiar aye?? shawdreamer
minor updates.....first things first... mechanical & electrical problems to sort, -what can only be described as a budgy being tortured under the bonnet whenever the cars moved in gear, maybe flywheel, maybe clutch? (will be wanting some advice on possibles for that one, consider yaselves pre-warned ) - entire gearbox changed out for recon'd box, drives nice and smooth now....and no budgy -door locks all need replacing (there well fubar'ed) - de-locking instead of replacing-drivers windows appears to have detached from its runner (motor winds but window stays up) - motor was well and truely fecked, adapted one from the 5dr Si along with the cables after that Ill start on the mods, -Xr front bumper (with some fireglassing from me to extend its depth rather than adding a laguna this time round)-Xr bulge bonnet & grill (depending on whats required to alter a Mk5b to a Mk5a up front) - On-route and soon to arrive-Xr spoiler (not sure yet) - gonna stick with the more subtle standard Gti/Si spoiler-ST Rear bumper - offered it up and tbh not altogether convinced on it now-Gti/Delta Side skirts (not decided yet) - genuine RS branded skirts going on -colour coded Mk6 bump strips (Had to many carpark related scratches to leave em out the build) - Be sniffin in the Forsale section soon-Mk6 elec. heated mirrors - primed and waiting on paint from supplier-half tint rears (have yet to find anything I like better) - done and dusted-aftermarket remote central locking (currently povy spec manual so Im guessing its gonna take a entire central locking kit to achieve) - swapping the Si's in when it go's to the scrapyard in the sky-de-locked-RS rear qauter pop-outs (if I can find a set that doesnt require me selling a kidney) - seen a few about but gone off the idea-Flow raven interior (looking at having my current set of wingabck flow ravens out my 5 door adapted....there just to comfy to pass on with the car ) - fecked it off and swappin the flow raven for some Ice theres likely a shitload more Im gonna do or decide to do along the way but Ill do my best to keep the thread upto date
shawdreamer
forementioned mk6 heated lecky windows.... as they came off....http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20978.jpg Good rub down with a bit of sandpaper (if anyone ever does this make sure to get the edges or I garantee you'll get flaking paint), ya dont need to be precise with the taping off in this case so any old tape will do..... note the brown packing tape http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20979.jpg hung it up and carefully sprayed every nuck and cranny..... yep... even the bits that are likely to never be seen again http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20980.jpg now all I need is my soddin paint and I can fit em and concentrate on pulling the loom out the Si's dash http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20981.jpg been on the phone to the bloke who's doing my paint mixing for me and he's promising tomorrow for delivery.....I will hold my breathe....as Ill be saving it for the obsenities Ill be using on the phone to him if it dont turn up tomorrow
