shawdreamer
paint turned up an hour ago, sourced acrylic as appose to celulose based for several good reason.1. its hardwearing finish (specially as the wingmirrors are a leading edge and prone to as many chips as a bonnet)2. rapid curing (let me do what would usually take 12+ hours of careful coating and drying in a mere 2hrs)3. less prone to colour distortion and patchiness during application4. resists fading more. first coat to check for imperfections I may have missed during prep..... luckily nonehttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20982.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20984.jpgand after ten+ coats and a near perfect baking temp from the sun....http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20985.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/20986.jpgjust a quick lacquer later and they should be right, tho saying that Ive found acrylic paint responds quite well to a 2000+ snadpaper'ing then polish/t-cut to shine rather than a lacquer
jlawie
10 coats?!?! Slightly over kill surely?
shawdreamer
10 coats?!?! Slightly over kill surely? you could argue so yer, but from personal experience and past spray jobs Ive came to the conclusion that the wing mirrors take as bad a beating (if not worse during turning) from stone chips and general road debri being flicked up from the tyres to impact the paint. Ive found a good few layers of paint is the best defence against multiple chips in your mirror paint

shawdreamer
minor updates.....first things first... mechanical & electrical problems to sort, -what can only be described as a budgy being tortured under the bonnet whenever the cars moved in gear, maybe flywheel, maybe clutch? (will be wanting some advice on possibles for that one, consider yaselves pre-warned ) - done - entire gearbox changed out for recon'd box, drives nice and smooth now....and no budgy -door locks all need replacing (there well fubar'ed) done to a degree, locks disabled, and aftermarket remote central locking install today- de-locking instead of replacing-drivers windows appears to have detached from its runner (motor winds but window stays up) done and working spot on after adjusting today after that Ill start on the mods, -Xr front bumper (with some fireglassing from me to extend its depth rather than adding a laguna this time round)-Xr bulge bonnet & grill (depending on whats required to alter a Mk5b to a Mk5a up front) - due monday, courtesy of JDMsport-Xr spoiler (not sure yet) - gonna stick with the more subtle standard Gti/Si spoiler -already inplace, just requires touching up-ST Rear bumper - offered it up and tbh not altogether convinced on it now-Gti/Delta Side skirts (not decided yet) - genuine RS branded skirts going on - primed and awaiting color -colour coded Mk6 bump strips (Had to many carpark related scratches to leave em out the build) - Be sniffin in the Forsale section soon-Mk6 elec. heated mirrors - done and fitted-half tint rears (have yet to find anything I like better) - done and dusted-aftermarket remote central locking (currently povy spec manual so Im guessing its gonna take a entire central locking kit to achieve) - done and dusted-de-locked-RS rear qauter pop-outs (if I can find a set that doesnt require me selling a kidney) - seen a few about but gone off the idea-Flow raven interior (looking at having my current set of wingabck flow ravens out my 5 door adapted....there just to comfy to pass on with the car ) - fecked it off and swapped the flow raven for some Ice courtesy of fiestangage theres likely a shitload more Im gonna do or decide to do along the way but Ill do my best to keep the thread upto date fitting headunit, amp kit, amp, speakers etc tomorrow.....amp will be fitted in a uncommon place as appose to the rear of the bench back thats often the norm, should make it near impossible for any prospective robbing nobba to steal (unlike the feckers who had the gear out my Si a few weeks back) will post up a walk through of the job for those curious to see the plans and results, might encourage a few to follow suit too. shawdreamer
the plan....drivers seat out and amp placed in general area I intend to install it too...... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21018.jpg carpet cut away and insulation beneath thinned down marginally (required to allow the amp to easily clear the lower crossmember in the seats frame, bolted down to the floorpan using rubber spacers, zinc based paint and tiger seal to prevent any water seaping in from below and rust getting a hold.... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21019.jpg main power/switched/earth and audio outs connected and routed (12v & 12v switched routed through the centre console as appose to down one side of the car) http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21020.jpg only bothered hooking up 2 of the 4 channels today as I was shattered from shitloads of kitchen remodeling and I only wanted to check everything was working ok). Tomorrow Ill finish the wiring and swap out the multitude of crap speakers currently in the car now, though....I did manage to get these in, Kenwood 250w fronts, they even look non-to-bad beneath the doorcard grill (forgive the hideous ford fabric used, god knows what ford were thinking ) http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21021.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21022.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21023.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21024.jpg tomorrow after the wirings done and right Ill look at curling the carpet flap you can see in previous pictures partially over the top of the amp and wires to tidy it up and supply a little protection, kind like this.... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21025.jpg then it'll be time for this lot to go in..... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21026.jpg 1 pair of infinity 300w 6x9's (possibly built into the rear cards)....(courtesy of a swap with fiestangage off ere)1 pair of MOS 300w 6x9's replacing the OEM rears.Alpine Cda-9851r headunit supplying the tunes and power http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21027.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21028.jpghttp://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21029.jpg
shawdreamer
amp in, wired, tested, speakers balanced and setup to my own personal preference, seat back in....and unless the prospective stereo stealin scummer that dares break into my car comes equiped with a variable angle rachet extention and various other unusual tools....he wont be gettin it out in a hurry ..... http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21057.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21058.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21059.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21060.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21061.jpg http://www.evo-host.co.uk/getimg/21062.jpg and yes...... Im aware it all needs a good hoovering now all I need do is decide on a material and style for recovering the fabric parts of my interior and seats (so so SO needs doing, the ford stuff is gash as feck) Edited August 10, 2009 by shawdreamer

Pimms
are you not worried about the amp overheating? especially with all that carpet around it..
shawdreamer
are you not worried about the amp overheating? especially with all that carpet around it.. its heat dispersal vanes are not obstructed, the carpet barely covers 5% of one edge of the casing and it is bolted directly to the floor pan (barring thin rubber washers) which will further allow it to gain tempreture dispersal from the floorpan itself which is generally far enough from any heat producing part to remain indefinetly cool to the touch. not to mention youll find that generally the cab benefits for more greatly from cold air cisculation than the usual location of aftermarket amps (namely the back of the rear bench) were air doesnt generally circulate and therefore doesnt overly benefit the amps heat dispersal
Matt86
I have always wondered about locating my amp under a seat but wasnt sure about ventilation issues
shawdreamer
I have always wondered about locating my amp under a seat but wasnt sure about ventilation issues I personally think my above theory holds credit, cant possibly be any worse than the back bench?
