Glad you're sticking at it, this topic feels a bit like my escort to be honest, im sure you'll be over the worst in no time.

What would Edd China do?

Ed has a bigger budget than I do. He's also a mechanic, so labour rates aren't an issue, lol. There's only so much I can do, but more importantly only so much I want to do on my knees in my driveway. I'm not 20 anymore :( For example, the handbrake cables are an estimated 5-6 hours DIY or less than 2 hours on a ramp. I know which I'd choose.

I'll get there in the end. It's just a loooooong journey with this one due to finances. With the E36 BMWs and stuff that I repaired I didn't really care about fitting £200 suspension kits as I knew they were just sell-on cars, but this one is a long term motor that I've been wanting for years. It's got to be done right :)

I'd love Wheeler Dealers to do an S2 episode though! :D

5-6 hrs for diy handbrake cables :nutter: not good, guess its because of all the 4wd gear. loving this thread though and knowing its going to get completed.

on a side note, just saw this 2 streets down from me.

havent seen one in this colour before, looked very tidy indeed, it was a 2.3 e.

  • 2 weeks later...

Photos soon, but I've misplaced my camera after last weeks holiday :-\ Not too much to report anyway.

Bought a replacement set of mint speedo clocks (£100 :| ) but unfortunately the odometer was at 191k miles, where as my S2 is at 131k with a service history and MOTs to back it up. I could accept a 10-20k discrepancy but 60k is too much. The only answer was to physically remove the odometer from the shagged gauges and put them it in the replacement one. This means 90-100% disassembly of the clocks; over 60 individual parts.

I'm rubbish with electics and I have hands like shovels, bigger actually, so I was dreading it and planning to put the best part of a day aside for it this weekend, but I drank half a dozen Carlsberg and dived into it tonight..... facepalm. After nearly 2 hours of rounded screws, snapped clips and heart-in-mouth moments, I have what seems to be a fully working set of dash clocks :D Rev gauge now working! Haven't moved it from the steet (6 beers...) but assume the speedo is fine. The fuel gauge is moving and the temp... well the temp isn't, but it wasn't before... so maybe a sender problem.

N/S/R caliper arrived this week and will be fitted soon. Just waiting on the replacement hazard stalks and I'll be back motoring again :D

Been a bit of a ball ache but keep at it :thumb: no hurry if its going to get done proper. Suffering this with the escort just now looking at all the welding its needing, Taking a break and enjoying the ST for a bit then ill just get back to it when it takes my fancy rather than spitting the dummy and breaking/weighing it in :thumb: Edited by scottg17

Scottg17, you're possibly insane taking on the rot on that Escort. No way could I attempt that. This S2 is a walk in the park in comparison

tricky, 220bhp as standard. Stock internals good for 400bhp. Once mine is back to good standard condition, which is a long, long way away, I'll probably be looking at something sensible without breaking the bank. All of the RS2 goodies are bolt on and it runs 311bhp out the box.

For the first time in my ownership (and probably many a year) the S2 has:

A working rev counter

Working hazard switch and lights

All indicators working

Window wipers working 100% (I had been looking for a replacement motor before fitting the new stalks today!)

Steering wheel dead centre when driving in a straight line

Massive progress in terms of sorting out fiddly, but essential, niggles.

Always some bad news though. I missed off the little counter weight on the speedo needle so it reads 0mph when I'm doing about 40 :| Clocks to come back out again and be dismantled tomorrow..... but then we're getting there!

Camera still MIA :|
