Still don't get that you're spending time on a runabout? ie keep for a short time?

Are you keeping it longer now?

What has possibly happened that 'both driveshafts, wishbones, drop links, track rod ends and top mounts' are all knackered?

Both.....driveshafts......honestly?

combination of things. The fact cars 11 years old with 152K miles, driveshafts are a well known failing on mk3 mondeo diesels and the n/side one because the outer CV had been damaged when it was replaced (useless mechanic who did it) and its covered about 10K since it was done, had no grease and basically destroyed itself.

Wishbones are original - 11 years and 152K A)where's the proof and B)so long as they look and feel fine theyre not knackered

drop links - only one is actually broken but always do in pairs fair play

track rod ends look to be original and no receipt for new ones Again so long as they look ok and dont have play theyre fine

top mounts were fitted pointing wrong way (ford put an arrow on them that must point forward, both were pointing towards centre of the car) Are they damaged, could they have just been turned around??

You might wanna change all your solid brake lines throughout, because the slight surface rust it may have means it needs changing, after all, its 10 years old

Better safe than sorry, if a part is on its way out time to replace.... or say wait for a tyre to go pop before it's replaced ;)

well its at the point where i cant sell it and get reasonable money back when i'm done so just gonna run it into the ground and when something expensive goes bang it'll go then. Driveshafts were £35 each, wishbones were £50, droplinks £28, track rod ends free, top mounts from ford were £30 odd for the pair and the rears were exactly £60. all the shocks were £40 off my friend so for all those bits my total spend somes to....... about £240

I will be fitting a short shifter to it but there is a reason. only cost about £25 and that will fix the fault with gear linkage in that the ball on base of gear stick is worn and the plastic top part is worn as well so the gear stick sort of flops about.

but that wont be till after I sell the mk1, same with the intercooler which has a small crack. botched it for now and I can get a larger alloy one for £110. I've also ordered an EGR bypass kit for a whole £25. this is not just a blank plate, its a complete removal of all the crap and has the pipe from the intercooler go straight to IM - joys of friends :)

Is workhorse another adjective for unlicensed taxi its the right colour and right mileage just a thought.

dominos delivery car actually :)

This is far from a workhorse run about, this is probably the most progress you've made on a project?

it's my main car and I want it to be nice and its easy to work on and have a friend who knows these quite well. I've done considerably more to my ST as it happens but never mind. did more to my escort too

lol @ everyone biting at the latest stevemo thread.

You should know by now. EVO Hits >>>>>>>>>> EVO quality.

Fair play for the constant photos though. Would prefer more technical detail if you're doing the work though.

playing to average IQ of forum posters :thumb:

what more technical detail would you like? driveshafts are a bugger to get out when the inboard part decided to stay in the gearbox? god bless pry bars and big hammers :D

I love that my little fing is 36years old and my wishbones, driveshafts etc are perfect.

my escort is 38 years old and only had a new driveshaft after i may of run out of talent and spun it and hit a curb and bent the driveshaft

i do believe the job of driveshafts on FWD cars is harder than RWD as somewhat less turning motion also the TDDI engine has significantly more torque than either an imp or mk1 escort can muster (without major engine modification)

p.s. dad had an imp as first car and did the 950cc conversion then swapped with his brother for mk1 escort 1300 super that after much modding was rallied as well as driven the reluctantly sold

its easy to work on
driveshafts are a bugger to get out

....

getting at it was easy

wooooo made standard power :D

quite an achievment for an 11 year old car with 152 and a bit thousand :D

Not only that, but factory spec torque figure as well ?! Never seen that before...

Seems really bit strange - torque is supposed to tail off after 1900 RPM, not nearly 2500 RPM...

Where are the wheel figures ?
